Kapil Sharma Controversies:
1. Drunk Tweet To PM Modi
In 2016, Kapil Sharma made headlines when he made a complaint of corruption to PM Narendra Modi via a tweet. Kapil made a tweet early in the morning that reads, “I am paying Rs 15 cr income tax from last 5 years n still I have to pay 5 lacs bribe to BMC office for making my office @narendramodi.”
In his next tweet, he added, “yeh hain aapke achche din” (These are your good days?).
Kapil was all over the headlines within a few hours. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis replied that he has taken note of his complaint and asked him to further give more details about the case. Even PM Modi asked him to provide the details and promised action within 24 hours. However, his tweet invited a lot of political drama. A Mumbai BJP legislator bashed Kapil by saying, “Does he not know that the prime minister of India does not run the BMC and is not directly responsible for each of the BMC employees? And why did Sharma not go to the police or anti-corruption bureau soon after instead of tweeting about it.”

Kapil was trolled by netizens as well. Later, Kapil revealed that he was drunk when wrote that tweet. He also mentioned that it cost him Rs 9 lakh. In his Netflix special, he revealed, “I left for the Maldives instantly, I lived there for 8-9 days. The moment I reached the Maldives, I asked them for a room with no internet. They asked, ‘Have you got married?’ I replied, ‘No, I just tweeted.’ My stay cost me Rs 9 lakhs. I didn’t even spend that much money on my education.”
2. Fight With Sunil Grover
Kapil Sharma was in the headlines when he had a public brawl with his colleague Sunil Grover while on a flight. Kapil and Sunil worked together on Comedy Nights With Kapil where Sunil appeared as Gutthi and Dr. Mashoor Gulati. Sunil was in his seat when intoxicated Kapil walked up to him and started hurling abuses. In no time, Kapil held Sunil’s collar and also slapped him. Kapil kept abusing and shouting, “Tu mera naukar hai, tere show flop tha…”. Meanwhile, Sunil stayed silent. Other team members then came to Sunil’s rescue. After this fight, Sunil vowed to never work with Kapil. He left the comedy show immediately and never returned. Kapil was slammed by people for his rash behavior towards his colleague.

3. Rift With Akshay Kumar
In 2022, Kapil Sharma had a rift with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. It was reported that Akshay Kumar refused to promote his film Bachchhan Pandey on The Kapil Sharma Show because the comedian denied Akshay’s request on his previous visit to the show. In one of the earlier episodes, Kapil asked Akshay about an interview he did with a ‘famous personality’ where Kumar asked him how he liked eating mangoes. Kapil was referring to the interview that Akshay did with PM Modi a few years back.
After the shoot got over, Akshay requested to not air this portion as it made light of the PM’s office. Akshay, who takes Kapil’s jokes in good spirit felt that the dig on the PM interview seemed to mock the dignity of such a high office. Apparently, it is the right of the guests to make such a request before the episode airs. The channel agreed, but the said scene was leaked on the internet soon after. Akshay felt that it was a breach of trust.
However, Kapil immediately sorted everything with Akshay. He then tweeted, “Dear friends, was reading all the news in media about me n Akshay paji, I have jus spoke to paji n sorted all this, it was jus a miss communication, all is well n very soon we r meeting to shoot Bachhan pandey episode. He is my big bro n can never be annoyed with me. thank you.”
4. Controversy During Release Of “The Kashmir Files”
In March 2022, Kapil Sharma was heavily bashed for allegedly refusing to promote The Kashmir Files on his show. The controversy began when director Vivek Agnihotri tweeted, “They refused to call us on their show because we don’t have big commercial star.”
Vivek Agnihotri’s tweet went viral and people began boycotting The Kapil Sharma Show. However, The Kashmir Files actor Anupam Kher then defended Kapil as he revealed that Kapil had invited him on the show but he declined as it is a serious film and doesn’t find it suitable to promote on a comedy show.
