Oscar Reveals Shortlist For 10 Categories, “2018” Indian Entry Not In Race

The Academy Awards has recently unveiled the shortlist for 10 categories ahead of the 96th Oscars ceremony. Notably, Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie,’ Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ and Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ stood out prominently among the finalists across multiple categories.

However, the Indian entry, the Malayalam film ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero,’ did not secure a spot in the shortlist of 15 films for its category.

In the race for recognition, the UK’s historical drama ‘The Zone of Interest,’ Denmark’s ‘The Promised Land,’ and Japan’s ‘Perfect Days’ are emerging as strong contenders.

Tovino Thomas starrer ‘2018’ was initially announced as India’s official entry for the 96th Oscars. The film delves into the narrative surrounding the devastating Kerala floods of 2018.

The movie’s creators proudly announced its immense success at the box office, having grossed over Rs 200 crore, thereby claiming the title of the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema.

In response to the film’s exclusion from the Oscars shortlist, director Joseph expressed regret to supporters and well-wishers. Nevertheless, he reflected on the privilege of representing India on such a global platform, describing the journey as a dream-like experience that he would cherish forever.

In an Instagram post, Joseph conveyed, “I sincerely apologize to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all. Nevertheless, the opportunity to represent India in this competition has been a dream-like journey that I will cherish for a lifetime.
