Swara Bhasker Shed Light On Bollywood South Divide And Boycott Trend

Swara Bhasker who is gearing up for Jahaan Chaar Yaar spoke on the boycott trend stating it's silly to celebrate somebody's failure.

The latest Bollywood films proved to be cold at the box office following the boycott trend. Recently Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha and Boycott Raksha Bandhan took over the internet leading to the failure of these movies by the biggest stars. This trend didn’t stop here, much awaited upcoming movies too faced the wrath of the cancel culture. The hashtag boycott trend was applicable to Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming film Vikram Vedha, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, and the latest Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger too went viral on social media. Swara Bhasker spoke on the boycott trend stating it’s silly to celebrate somebody’s failure.

“I don’t like this kind of division. I think that, as artists, as an industry, if films do well at the box office, it’s good for everyone. I think it’s very silly and petty to divide and celebrate somebody’s failure or to feel jealous and envious of somebody else’s success. We must understand very simply that we are coming out of Covid. It is very devastating, especially for distributors and theater owners, and exhibitors. People, when they talk about films, forget that it’s not only the actors. You can dislike an actor and go on about nepotism, but the film industry actually produces jobs. It’s giving jobs to people. So I don’t actually think that there is anything to celebrate if, you know, (a film fails).”

Swara Bhasker added on the boycott trend, “There’s this whole trend on Twitter and on social media, they want to bring Bollywood down, they call it stupid names. I find it so petty, and also disgusting, because I feel that these people in their blind hatred are forgetting that Bollywood gives a livelihood to many people.”

Bollywood’s condition is more miserable with the audience comparing it with the success of South movies. KGF 2, RRR, Pushpa: The Rise, and the latest Karthikeya 2 among others turned out to be biggest blockbusters, while Bollywood movies are undergoing a dry spell. Amidst all this Bollywood vs South debate came to light. When many celebrities shared their thought over Bollywood – South divide considering it one Indian cinema, Swara Bhasker too shed light on the debate.

“As far as South films are doing well, it is somewhat a media generalization. You hear about RRR, Pushpa and KGF because those are the three films in the South that have done well, but the South is also releasing so many films that are not doing well. It is not like every film released in the South is a hit. You’re hearing about those that are becoming a hit. That said, even Bollywood has had Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Gangubai in the last year.”

On the work front, Swara returned to films after four years. Veere Di Wedding was her last movie with Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Shikha Talsania. Swara will now be seen in Jahaan Chaar Yaar, a film directed by Kamal Pandey. The story is about four housewives who take off on a Goa trip, starring Meher Vij, Pooja Chopra, and Shikha Talsania along with Swara Bhasker. Produced by Vinod Bachchan the film will release on 16th September.
