Swara Bhasker Feels Bollywood Is Being Discredited After Sushant Singh Rajput’s Death

Swara Bhasker listed reasons why Bollywood is suffering a low success rate, claims SSR’s death created a bad image, and compared the situation to Rahul Gandhi

Bollywood is drowning with audiences disliking the content and boycotting every other film. So far in eight months of 2022, only a handful of movies worked at the box office. Many celebrities have been vocal about the failure in the industry and now Swara Bhasker has opened up on the critical situation. She listed reasons why Bollywood is suffering a low success rate.

The Veere Di Weeding actress feels Sushant Singh Rajput’s mysterious death has created a bad image of Bollywood. She also compared the current situation to that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. She thinks a slump is happening across Bollywood agreeing to Anurag Kashyap’s statement that there is an atmosphere of recession in the country. Talking about the same she explained the various reasons behind this crisis in Bollywood.

In an interview with India Today, she listed reasons for the slump in Bollywood. She said, “The first reason and this I am quoting Anurag [ Kashyap], I heard him say this in an interview and it made perfect sense to me. ‘He said the country is going through an economic slump’ and film is a leisure activity and no one wants to spend money on leisure when things otherwise are so costly. So, that’s the first thing and nobody’s talking about that. Everyone is blaming Bollywood, as if Bollywood is responsible for people not coming to the theater. That’s totally untrue.”

“Secondly, after COVID, people don’t want to go out of their houses. The third reason is that OTT has come in and really disrupted the watching experience. The fourth reason is after the unfortunate and tragic suicide of Sushant, Bollywood has been painted as a really dark place, that is only about drugs and alcohol and sex. My question is very simple, ‘if everyone is doing just this, then who is making films?’ Unfortunately, Bollywood is being discredited. There are people who just don’t like Bollywood.”

She also compared the situation to what happened with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “I don’t know it’s kind of a strange comparison but I am reminded of Rahul Gandhi. Everyone kept calling him pappu, so now everybody believes it. I have met him and he is a perfectly intelligent and articulate man. With Bollywood also, this ‘pappufication’ has happened.”

On the work front, Swara returned to films after four years. Veere Di Wedding was her last movie with Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Shikha Talsania. Swara will now be seen in Jahaan Chaar Yaar, a film directed by Kamal Pandey. The story is about four housewives who take off on a Goa trip, starring Meher Vij, Pooja Chopra, and Shikha Talsania along with Swara Bhasker. Produced by Vinod Bachchan the film will release on 16th September.
