Farah Khan Reveals She Wrote A Plot Similar To ‘Dunki’ For Shah Rukh Khan In ‘Happy New Year,’ But He Didn’t Like It: ‘It’s Very Strange’

Farah disclosed that she had written a storyline for Happy New Year, revolving around four young men aspiring to flee to America, hoping to evade the law.

Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, “Dunki,” anticipated to hit theaters this year. The initial teaser recently dropped, depicting Shah Rukh’s team’s aspirations to travel to the US. However, in a revealing YouTube podcast with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa, filmmaker Farah Khan shared an intriguing backstory: the plot originally intended for Shah Rukh in “Happy New Year.”

Farah disclosed that she had written a storyline for “Happy New Year,” revolving around four young men aspiring to flee to America, hoping to evade the law. Their ticket to this dream was a dance competition whose grand finals were set in Las Vegas. Surprisingly, Shah Rukh declined this version, expressing that he felt too mature for the role.

“I wrote a version of Happy New Year that Shah Rukh did not like. It is very strange because now I’m watching the promo of Dunki… That Happy New Year was about 4 boys who want to go to America and be tadipaar and the only way they want to do it is if they take part in a dance competition because the finals are in Las Vegas,” she recalled.

The teaser for “Dunki” seems to mirror a similar theme, depicting a group of individuals keen on relocating to the US, willing to resort to illicit means to achieve their goal.

Farah indicated that Shah Rukh’s rejection of the concept aligned with “Dunki,” implying a potential resemblance between the two. Speculation has arisen online, suggesting that “Dunki” might be an alternate adaptation of “Munna Bhai Chale America,” which was initially planned as the third installment in the franchise starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi but never came to fruition.

Ultimately, “Happy New Year” evolved into a heist-themed film, featuring a star-studded cast including Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, and Vivaah Shah, among others.
