Poonam Pandey’s recent “fake death” PR stunt has garnered huge media attention. The model and actress has faced huge backlash and has been massively criticized by both the public and celebrities. Although Poonam wanted to create awareness of cervical cancer, her stunt backfired on the actress creating a huge controversy.
However, did you know that Poonam Pandey isn’t the only actress who faked her death for publicity? Yes, you read that right, previously Bollywood veteran Manisha Koirala had once faked her death in order to gain more publicity. Ahead of the release of her film, Criminal in the year 1995, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt spread the news that the actress had died.
The filmmaker published a poster in the newspaper that read “Maisha Koirala has died”. However, there’s a twist. The filmmaker did it since in the film, Criminal, Manisha Koirala’s character died and Nagarjuna investigated the case. And so in order to gain more publicity the team decided to pull off a stunt.
And even back in those days, the audience didn’t find the stunt suitable and tagged it as distasteful Some had even fired a complaint against filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt for pulling off a fake death stunt in order to gain publicity.
For the unversed, on 2 February, Poonam’s agency issued a statement on her Instagram account announcing her death. The statement stated that the actress had died due to cervical cancer. However, on 3rd February, Poonam herself came out and released her video revealing that she is alive and it was all just a stunt to promote awareness regarding cervical cancer.
