Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Critic Review:

How to make a thriller. An essay by writer-director Aban Bharucha Deohans.

Kill a few men and some girls too. A politician’s secretary has been shot dead in a bar along with several others including Asma Khan (Surbhi Rohra), a sex worker.

Put on the job a DCP so smart that one sniff and Avinash Verma (Manoj Bajpayee) can separate one corpse as different from the ‘bar-ful’ of bodies. Just a matchbox can even lead him to the killer.

A lady cop should be on the team. Sanjana Bhatia (Prachi Desai) may have no role but she’s enough to fill the gender quota.

The cop-hero must have a lonely personal life, never mind how half-baked and incomplete that track may be. Avinash is the chai-coffee type, he never eats a morsel.

The super cop must be stressed by a superior who intermittently threatens to shut down his special crime unit or take him off the case but won’t sanction enough funds for the team to do its job. From Netflix’s famous Blacklist to every desi crime serial, the threats that come from the top never change.

Spotlight somebody really bizarre, make him ham. Arjun Chauhan (Dinker Sharma) with masks on the office wall who performs all day in his room and shouts at people to get out, will do just fine.

A good-hearted, socially conscious Rahim Chacha may be substituted with a nondescript hakim chacha who calls everybody bitiya and beta.

To be updated and cool, let the DCP make the right noises about gender. Avinash schools a man on the road on how to treat a woman, a scene forced in to give the DCP an entry. “No means no” and “Aren’t sex workers women who should be respected?” still fetch a brownie point.

Sprinkle a few ‘chu…’ and ‘ma…chu…’ abuses in the dialogue. This is the post-Wasseypur era. Cringe.

Strew a few red herrings around. Remember the obvious is never the culprit.

Now that Aban has got all her cliches in place, a crime story around human trafficking emerges.

On one side, young nubile girls are being readied for “auditions” in Jaipur.

On another side, a group of sleazes have gathered in a haveli for a bachelor party. The menu for the rich boys’ club: ‘we supply shaadi se pehle the suhaag raat experience’,  ‘we supply what your loins desire’.

The third cut is to DCP Avinash Verma and team racing against time to burst the “auditions”.

As a crime story, Aban’s plotline is fine. Especially since she saves up someone she hasn’t really introduced for the finale. The killer gets to deliver a monologue on their sad and sordid childhood.

The problem is that the attempt to provide different misleads is so laboured that it’s unexciting. Even an actor like Manoj Bajpayee just does his job and doesn’t deliver anything extraordinary.

LGBTQ issues, friends and family casually referring to Asma’s profession like she’s just another career girl, a mother who curses her as a ‘kalmoohi’ only to wail “Meri Asma ko kya ho gaya… Asma, Asma” the next moment, is all amateurish staccato more than smooth and stylish.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout – Watch Or Not?: It has twists and turns but is so flatly narrated that if you skip it, you won’t be missing anything unique.
