Barbie: Greta Gerwig Breaks Silence On The Oscar Nominations Snub: “I Wanted It For Margot Robbie”

Director Greta Gerwig reacts to Barbie not receiving nominations for Best Actress and Best Director categories at the Oscar Awards 2024.

At last, Greta Gerwig has spoken out over Barbie’s lack of nominations for Best Actress and Best Director categories at the 2024 Academy Awards. Many were surprised to see Greta’s film (Barbie), which went on to become the highest-grossing movie in the history of the film business, overlooked in significant categories. Following the official announcement, the major highlight was Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s lack of nominations, despite the film earning nods in eight other categories. Greta has finally reacted, days after the director of the pink story was snubbed.

In a recent interview with Times Magazine for its Women Of the Year special event, Greta Gerwig opened up on the academy awards topic, ”Of course I wanted it for Margot. But I’m just happy we all get to be there together. A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated,’ I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, I know!” Greta added.

In a previous discussion with Variety, Margot Robbie had also expressed her concerns for Greta Gerwig, as the latter wanted to see her name in the nominations for best director’s category. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”
