“Working With Bhansali A High Pressure Job”, Ranveer Singh Spills Bean Over His 2nd Film With Bhansali

"Bajirao Mastani" was a commercial success and its credit goes to the makers and actors who gave their hearts to the film. But it was not easy for actors to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ranveer Singh called it a “High Pressure Job”.

“Bajirao Mastani”, a period drama and another proof of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Huge Empire, was completed 8 years of its release. This film starring Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh represents the essence of Peshwa Bajirao’s real life. Historical characters are always more difficult to portray than usual characters, as there comes a major responsibility to handle the dignity of the characters and these actors fulfill it in quite a successful manner, except the one when people targeted the makers saying Kashibai and Matsani never danced with each other. Well, this film was a commercial success and its credit goes to the makers and actors who gave their hearts to the film. But it was not easy for actors to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ranveer Singh called it a “High Pressure Job”.

In an old interview with ‘Deccan Chronicle’, Ranveer Singh opened up about the work process of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Before Bajirao Mastani, released in the year 2015, Ranveer Singh had made a movie, under Bhansali’s venture “Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela”, and thus, when he was asked about the best and worst things about working with Bhansali, he said that he is very collaborative director throughout the process, but the same best thing can be worse too. He further explained, “You never know what he wants, as most times, he also doesn’t know what he wants. He is also exploring, discovering. It’s a beautiful process, but it can become a very high-pressure job. Sometimes, he decides on the spot what he wants you to say, and you have five minutes before the camera starts rolling. But then, he will do everything in his power to help you live up to the challenge.”

Ranveer’s preparation journey for the role of Peshwa Bajirao was thrilling for him. He wanted to leave the city, but he couldn’t because the director wanted him to be in contact regularly. But he stayed away from his close people to leave Ranveer Singh behind and to get a hold on the character. His accent coach trained him very well, he watched Marathi movies, watched epic dramas, read his script multiple times. He worked on his voice, his body posture to reflect Peshwa Bajirao on screen.

For that character, Ranveer Singh received ‘Filmfare Best Actor’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali was awarded with the ‘National Film Award For Best Direction’.
