Initially audiences were not fond of Rani Mukherjee's extra alluring voice and hence it had to be dubbed.

“Aati Kya Khandala” is one of the retro songs on which Gen Z vibes. This song from the movie “Ghulam” was one of the hit movies of the late 90s. Ghulam, starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee, was directed by Vikram Bhatt. In a recent chat with Siddharth Kannan, the director recalls some memories of his hit film Ghulam. He revealed the reason behind dubbing Rani Mukherjee’s voice in the film.

Ghulam was released in the year 1998 and, after 25 years of the film’s release, Vikram Bhatt narrated that flashback journey. During the shoot, Vikram’s brother Mahesh Bhatt and actor Aamir Khan had some disagreement regarding the film. Both of them were quite right in their places and hence the film turned out to be a successful venture.

Talking about his casting, Vikram cast Rani Mukherjee after watching her “Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat”, released in 1997. He was impressed by observing Rani’s acting skills in the movie. He loved the on-screen appearance of Rani portraying Mala. But her voice wasn’t that familiar to people and audiences were not fond of her alluring voice. So Vikram decided to dub her voice. Later, it was dubbed by Mona Ghosh Shetty. Rani received a Zee Cine Award for that film. The film was a box office hit and earned an impressive amount at the domestic box office and overseas too.
