When you are a public figure, it is quite a challenge to stay away from controversies. And the lives of people in the entertainment industry are just another gossip for common citizens. Actors have been found to have multiple relationships and extra-marital affairs. Moushumi Chatterjee, the popular actress was also linked with many of her co-stars. At the peak of her career, in the 70s, she worked with superstars like Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar and Dharmendra. Even though she was married at the age of 15 and had a child by 17, she was rumored of being romantically involved with other men. Back in the 70s, it was believed that she was having an extra-marital with her Anuraag (1973 film) co-star Vinod Mehra. And the rumors were so strong that even superstar Rajesh Khanna once teased her about the same. When Moushumi was pregnant, Khanna asked Moushumi if it was Vinod Mehra’s child.
Recently, in an exclusive interview with senior journalist Bharathi S Pradhan, the veteran actress opened up about the rumours. When asked if she was having an affair with Vinod, Moushumi grinned and said, “He didn’t come to my wedding. He was the best man. He used to study with Babu (Jayant Mukherjee) at Xaviers College. And we lived in the same building.”
When Bharathi S Pradhan grilled further, Moushumi emphasized that she was linked with other men too often. She said, “In those days, people in Calcutta used to say that I was romantically involved with Ranjit Mallick. I never lacked anything in my married life that would look outside for something. It’s not like that. But that doesn’t mean that I was never wrong in my life. But the minute I understood that I am in the wrong part, I tried my level best to come back to the right path. Vinod Mehra would be the last person for me to be romantically involved.
She then spoke about how she was linked with Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar as well. Moushumi said, “Once in a magazine, it was written that I was caught with Jeetendra. The same magazine also reported that I was found in same place with Sanjeev Kumar. I called the editor, who is also Babu’s friend and said, ‘you should decide which story are you going to carry, wither I am having an affair or with Sanjeev Kumar. You should decide yourself’.”
“And am I that foolish woman that I would go someplace and get caught?” she added.
Moushumi is married to Jayant Mukherjee, (son of music director Hemant Kumar). Despite such strong rumors of her affairs, she has managed to maintain a happy married life with Jayant. She said, “We are Tom and Jerry. I think we grew together.”
