Happy Re-Release Fever in Kerala Proves Allu Arjun Was a Pan-India Phenomenon Long Before Pushpa

0

Allu Arjun has truly redefined the term “Pan-India star” with his phenomenal success. While the world witnessed the magic of the Icon Star after the historic success of Pushpa, he has been commanding immense stardom for years. This was once again proven with the re-release of his 2006 film Happy, as fans flocked to theatres in huge numbers. It is absolutely incredible to see people going gaga over a 19-year-old film and returning to theatres solely for one star, Allu Arjun.

It is often seen that many superstars earn nationwide recognition after delivering a blockbuster. However, Allu Arjun has built a genuine fanbase across multiple states over the last two decades. The celebrations surrounding the re-release of Happy prove that Allu Arjun’s popularity was not created by Pushpa; it existed long before the Pan-India era. Very few actors can command opening-day celebrations for a new release in one region and generate similar excitement for a nearly two-decade-old dubbed film in another. Yet, Allu Arjun has made it possible with his strong Pan-India fanbase. The success of Happy’s re-release highlights a rare achievement: audiences returning to theatres not because of a trend, but because of the star himself.

Moreover, Allu Arjun has always shared a special emotional bond with Malayali audiences, and the re-release of Happy has once again proved it. The title “Mallu Arjun” is not merely a marketing campaign; it was bestowed upon him by the audience themselves, making him one of the earliest cross-regional stars of modern Indian cinema. He has established himself as an actor whose appeal transcends language barriers and geographical boundaries.

Today, Allu Arjun stands tall as a true Pan-India star whose stardom spans generations and languages. While Pushpa, created a nationwide phenomenon, especially in the Hindi belt, the overwhelming response to Happy’s Malayalam re-release proves that his reach extends far beyond a single franchise. Long before the industry coined the term “Pan-India,” Allu Arjun had already cultivated a passionate fanbase outside the Telugu-speaking states. Very few stars enjoy both nostalgic admiration in one state and peak mass hysteria in another at the same time. That is the mark of a true Pan-India icon.

Allu Arjun has once again created a massive stir with the announcement of his upcoming film Raaka. Despite being just a poster reveal of his new avatar, it became a nationwide sensation and one of the biggest character reveals ever witnessed. Now, audiences across the country are eagerly waiting to see more of him on the big screen.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata Movie Review:

Cinematically, the first round of applause goes to Kangana Ranaut for not only playing Cama nurse Geeta Madhav Gandhare with professional efficiency but for also not overshadowing her colleagues Girija Oak, Smita Tambe and the others who play her fellow nurses. It is as an ensemble cast should be, screen time shared by all.

In real life, a resounding round of applause has been long overdue for the feisty nurses of Cama who worked fearlessly and tirelessly on a night they were not trained for. Nobody was prepared for a terror attack on Mumbai where blood was splattered in restaurants, roads, railway stations, five-star hotels and a hospital.

Films (like Major) and web series (like Mumbai Diaries) have told many stories about the valiant heroes of 26/11.

Writer-director Manoj Tapadia picks a theme not filmed before, putting the spotlight on the nurses who saved nearly 400 lives. As two terrorists armed with AK-47s prowled around Cama, intent on killing and spilling as much blood as they could, the nurses quietly handheld every patient including pregnant women in the throes of delivery and premature babies in incubators.

Tapadia introduces the nurses. They have homes and families, some who don’t quite respect a nurse’s job or understand her dedication. But they turn up for duty day after day, sharing a warm camaraderie amongst themselves even as they promise to save every life possible. A sensitive moment encapsulates it when a nurse looks at a baby with HIV and vows, as long as it’s breathing, we’re going to fight for its life.

On a normal day at the hospital, there are the usual skirmishes with matrons and women in administration who throw the book at them, the nurses standing up for one another. There’s time for a bit of mirth too as one nurse is known to spout Urdu poetry nobody quite understands.

Generously sprinkled with Marathi for authenticity, once caregiving and camaraderie are established, the terrorists enter Cama.

Tapadia films the Cama staff that rose to the occasion in much detail, how patients were shifted, emergency procedures conducted with lights switched off and shhh, no noise to give away their location to the terrorists who’re on the premises.

But…a mobile phone rings.

The problem with Tapadia’s narration is that despite the tension and tautness inherent in such a situation, there’s a familiarity, a routineness in his telling that renders it unexciting. There’s also a misplaced touch of humour when at the height of tension, someone offers gutka to a nurse looking desperately for a lighter.

As the nurses head home after a nightmare shift, there’s a predictable welcome awaiting them, a change of heart in families.

Geeta Gandhare’s courage continues long after the night comes to an end. In real life, it was nurse Anjali Kulthe who bravely identified Kasab as one of the terrorists, helping the prosecution hand the perpetrator of 26/11 a death sentence. Anjali is changed to Geeta in the film for the license to add a bit of human spice to her life. A final nod of appreciation from Geeta’s husband (Prasad Oak) wraps it up neatly.

A nod the nurses richly deserved.

But a cinematic documentation of such exemplary dedication deserved to be told with much more panache, much more excitement in the screenplay and narration.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata – Watch it or not? This can be watched on OTT.

Main Vaapas Aaunga Movie Review:

In Chandigarh, 95-year-old Ishar Singh Grewal alias Kinnu (Naseeruddin Shah) is battling a stroke and dementia; Dadaji is on his deathbed.

Amidst his rambling delirium over Martians and Sargodha while making cussed comments at family members taking care of him, the searing pain of 1947 finally stands out.

UK-based grandson Nirvair (Diljit Dosanjh), between IT jobs and a failure at standup comedy, leaves behind a relationship (with girlfriend Banita Sandhu) that’s defying definition, and heads to Chandigarh.

Between Nirvair’s dogged attempt to decipher grandpa’s delirious but determined hold on a trauma that needs closure, the pangs of separation, the pain of Partition, the horrifying truths families seek to keep buried, emerge with ferocity.

To Imtiaz Ali’s credit, every sequence has an emotional high, or depth if you wish. The frequent swings to an undivided India are accompanied by camerawork that makes it out to be an idyllic world of poetry, amity and green fields. There’s clarity that young Kinnu (Vedang Raina) and Afsana alias Jia (Sharvari) are a couple, she full of girly nakhras and chand balis, he full of promise that he’ll never desert her. He will return for her. But it takes an inordinately long while for even this much clarity to come through as the many flashes to pre-Partition Punjab have to be pieced together for some modicum of comprehension.

The overuse of tripping over the past makes the writing by Imtiaz Ali and Nayanika Mahtani indulgently disjointed. Half the time who’s who is as confusing as Dadaji’s delirium. Somewhere in the past is Manish Chaudhari (holding up communal brotherhood), there’s Sanjay Suri (unrecognisable) from the Grewal family, Mashhoor Amrohi (Jia’s family) and a sprinkling of others running in and out of the frame, barely establishing a grounded, rounded story.

Between Dadaji’s cries of ‘Jia, Jia’, and Nirvair dashing around to make sense of the painful past of the Grewal family, there emerges the heart connect with the traumas of 1947. A trauma that lingers in families to this day.

When a filmmaker embarks on love and pain, he steers clear of communal politics. Imtiaz too roots for peace, endorsing the thought that those who left home did not have a choice. But separation, the bloodshed, rape and carnage (pregnant wombs torn open) that came with it, will keep getting exhumed by memories.

Imtiaz has a flair for poetic storytelling. Naseeruddin Shah and Diljit Dosanjh have a bond that finally has the grandson finding Jia on the other side of the border to bring closure to Kinnu. The young Kinnu who had tattooed Mallka dil fareb on his forearm as proof of his undying love for Jia.

The final moments where Nirvair desperately seeks Jia as Dadaji watches over the phone are poignant as are the end credits which roll with the miseries of refugees world over, Diljit’s voice and presence owning the screen. Ultimately, it’s the poignancy of the loss of humanity that prevails, not just one love story.

If only Imtiaz Ali didn’t take such a long-winded, disjointed and often incomprehensible route to touch that poignant note.

PS: The premise and title do seem much ado as Kinnu did go back for Jia only to return disheartened that she was married to someone else. So how is his Main Wapas Aaunga promise termed ‘unfulfilled’?

Main Vaapas Aaunga – Watch Or Not?: Honestly, the few who have grandparents with painful stories to tell, the fewer who have never seen the carnage of 1947, and the handful who have the patience, may sit through this tale of love and separation.

Governor Movie Review:

It could’ve turned into a documentary. But mercifully, director Chinmay Mandlekar and his array of co-writers (Ravi Asrani, Saurabh Bharat, Subhendu Bhattacharya, Vipul Amrutlal Shah) use brief touches of humour and bring human, familial elements into the storytelling, to make it an interesting watch.

Outside, the financial condition is dire with spiralling prices.

Inside, new RBI Governor A Ramanan (Manoj Bajpayee) is bemused by the celebrations to welcome him. There is a lightness in the office atmosphere (like the lift scene) that keep the telling easy and a tough topic like an economic crisis is put across simply, making it comprehensible to the layman.

Add to it, the human inspirations that surround Ramanan. Wife Vandita (Madhoo Shah) with her pujas, prayers and positivity, the Deputy Governor (Noushad Mohammed Kunju) who inspires his senior with the line, ‘Fathers don’t quit’ to pull him out of a low mood, an office peon whose borrowings help Ramanan think out of the box.

As revealed in the promo, when India is on the verge of bankruptcy, RBI Governor Ramanan does the impossible. It’s a race against time as he and his core team secretly send out India’s reserves of gold to Switzerland and London to bail out the country.

There’s nosey journalist Aditi Verma (Adah Sharma) on their tail.

There are hiccups on the way to the airport, Ramanan has to think on his feet to send out the gold on time. They have a deadline to meet.

There’s a neat BG score as the vans laden with gold head to the airport.

There’s a bit of humour as a goon wearing thick chains of gold creates a ruckus on the road and Gandhiji on the currency note brings a smile.

‘Bechne aur bachane mein ek maatra ka difference hai’ is a smart line.

Manoj Bajpayee, giving Ramanan a south Indian touch in his dialogue delivery, smoothly steers the Governor through India’s nightmarish crisis. Madhoo, Noushad Kunju and Jaywant Wadkar (as the office peon) slip into their roles well. But there is an overdoing of the south Indianness.

The telling also has its imperfections. The Deputy Governor’s son’s cricket comes suddenly and jerkily into the narration. There’s simplistic predictability in the characters and situations. A team player who’s headed to the US is caught between his visa interview and meeting the critical deadline for the airlift of the gold. Guess what he chooses. Or, even before the Governor says it, you know he’s going to tell his staff to book him an economy ticket.

Adah Sharma’s Aditi also has an unfortunate cardboard feel to it. From her first bouts of imperiousness (flinging an intern’s work on the ground) to her about-turn with her editor, there’s little to make Aditi substantial. Though her Loan Ranger title was super.

But the crisis itself is well handled, and Dr Manmohan Singh gets his due as the Finance Minister who steered India into the liberalisation era, freeing the country from the rigid license raj.

Altogether, it’s a welcome addition to the growing library of real-life cinema with stories that must be told.

Governor – Watch it or not? Whether you catch it in a theatre or see it when it’s streamed on an OTT platform, it’s an important chapter to acquaint yourself with.

Himanshu Jangra’s Former Boss Speaks Out After Terminating Him Over ₹370 Biryani Remark: “Things Were Offensive…”

0

The controversy surrounding Himanshu Jangra’s viral ₹370 biryani remark continues to generate discussion online. After facing outrage over his viral comments made during comedian Pranit More’s Gurugram show, Jangra lost his job at a Gurugram-based design and marketing company.

Now, company founder Vivek Vishwakarma has explained why that major decision was taken.

Speaking up about the incident with India Today, Vivek said he initially did not pay much attention to the viral clip because he was busy with work. However, once the controversy grew and messages began flooding the company’s social media pages, he decided to watch the video himself.

While he admitted the remarks were offensive, he also said the version of Himanshu seen in the clip was very different from the employee he knew at work. “Things were offensive, but that was not the person that I knew at the workplace — that was a totally different personality. I know his mindset. He is quite a good employee,” Vivek shared.

According to Vivek, an internal review was conducted and no complaints were found regarding Himanshu’s workplace behaviour.

But the founder further revealed that the situation quickly began affecting the company itself and said, “Every post got 100s and 10000s bad comments. Few clients whom we were in talk with also stepped back so my work was getting hampered.” He further added that people were associating the company with the viral controversy which created challenges for a business that relies heavily on its online presence and social media reputation.

Vivek described the decision as a business call, saying, “Yes, yes, yes, totally, totally. It was a business decision for myself, my brand.”

During the conversation, Vivek also felt that the situation could have been addressed at the venue itself. “Pranit should also have cut it then and there itself from his first comment.” He shared that Himanshu later told him he got carried away by the atmosphere of the event and never expected the clip to spread so widely online.

Himanshu Jangra’s ₹370 biryani controversy has become much bigger than a single viral moment. While many believe the backlash was justified, the incident has also sparked conversations about accountability, online outrage, consequences and whether people should be given space to learn from their mistakes. As the debate continues, the story remains a reminder of how quickly a few words can change someone’s life.

Amid Janhvi Kapoor’s Peddi Controversy, Kangana Ranaut Says Female Actors Should Voice Their Concerns

Its been days since its release and the discussion around the portrayal of women in Peddi continues to grow, now actress-politician Kangana Ranaut known to speak her mind has shared her perspective on this issue. While promoting her upcoming epic true-events based film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, the actor spoke about how performers can address situations where they feel a character may be presented in an uncomfortable way.

Her comments come shortly after the film’s director Buchi Babu Sana apologised for certain scenes in Peddi and confirmed that changes would be made following audience feedback.

“Aap Apna Side Rakh Sakte Ho”

Speaking to PTI, Kangana Ranaut explained that filmmaking is a collaborative process and actors should not hesitate to express their concerns.

She said, “By and large, as per my experience it has always been that when I agree to do a film, there are so many various perspectives… you can bring light to that and say, ‘Thoda sa aisa bhi sound kar raha hain yeh’. They may not want to objectify or something but aise toh koi bhi filmein nahi banana chah raha hain ki aao inko objectify kare.”

The actor further added, “Maine kya dekha hua hain ki woh log uss tarah se sochte nahi hain… ki oh achcha aisa lag raha hain. As a woman aap apna side rakh sakte ho. Ha, ye aisa lag raha hain, ki aap aisa kehna chah rahe hain aur ye achcha nahi lag raha and mostly sab agree karte hain ki nahi nahi hum ne actually socha nahi ki as a set of men hum logo ne jab likha tab nahi laga ki galat tha. Toh aisi baatein ho jaati hain. Agar aap kaam kar rahe hein kisi film pe toh its like a collaboration.”

Why Peddi Faced Criticism

The controversy began after several viewers raised concerns about the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma. Some felt the character lacked depth, while others questioned scenes that appeared to blur the line between romance and consent.

A particular sequence that involves a kiss without consent became one of the most discussed moments from the film. Critics also argued that certain shots focused more on the character’s appearance than her role in the story.
