South cinema beloved veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai on June 10, 2026, at the age of 84, leaving a huge void in Tamil film industry. The acclaimed director had been unwell for some time and was reportedly battling health-related issues in recent months.
His passing has left the Kollywood industry and cinema lovers across the country mourning the loss of a filmmaker who changed the way stories were told on screen.
Bharathiraja: The Director Who Took Cinema Beyond Studios
Bharathiraja made his directorial debut with 16 Vayathinile in 1977, a film that transformed Tamil cinema. At a time when many films were largely shot inside studios, he chose real villages, fields, and rural locations as the backdrop for his stories.
Through films like Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyadhai, Vedam Puthithu, Kadalora Kavithaigal and Karuthamma, he explored human relationships, social issues and village life with honesty and simplicity.
A Mentor To Many Stars
Beyond his contribution in filmmaking, Bharathiraja was also known for introducing and nurturing new talent which was rare. And several actors later became major names in Tamil cinema got important opportunities through his films.
He also shared memorable collaborations with legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja, creating songs and stories that remain loved even today.
Born as Chinnasamy in present-day Theni district, Bharathiraja’s journey to cinema was far from easy. Talking about his life before entering films, he took up various jobs and even spent time in the Army. In later years, he also appeared as an actor in films such as Aayutha Ezhuthu, Thiruchitrambalam and Maharaja.
For many fans, he will always be remembered for beginning his films with the familiar greeting, “En Iniya Tamil Makkale” — a phrase that became a part of Tamil cinema history.
