Madonna recently posted on Instagram, showcasing a series of photos of herself using a typewriter, surrounded by various papers. One of the images displays a possible title, “Who’s That Girl,” which pays homage to her 1987 song and movie of the same name, appearing on the first page of what seems to be a script.
The script gives another hint with the mention of “Madonna and ECW” contributing to rewrites, which appears to indicate that Secretary writer Erin Cressida Wilson was involved in the project after Diablo Cody had to leave. Initially, Amy Pascal was assigned as the producer of the film.
The Hollywood Reporter was informed by a source that the movie project faced constant challenges during development, and the scripts underwent multiple revisions, all of which exceeded 180 pages. Discussions occurred regarding dividing the movie into two parts or creating a miniseries, but these ideas never materialized. At the time, the source stated, “Condensing 40 years of success into a single movie is a daunting task.”
The biopic was scheduled to be directed by Madonna. Julia Garner had emerged as the top choice to portray the iconic artist after a rigorous audition process that involved several contenders, such as Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demie, competing for the lead role. The candidates took part in grueling and sometimes 11-hour dance practice sessions with Madonna’s choreographer and the artist herself.
Currently, it remains uncertain whether Universal is still involved in the project.
