Shailene Woodley is set to take on the role of Janis Joplin in a new biopic about the legendary rock singer, marking one of her most ambitious projects to date.
As announced on Tuesday, the actress received a $2.49 million tax credit for a commitment from the California Film Commission for the film. And, as per the state’s film commission, the biopic is qualified under $10 million in production expenses for a 30-day shoot in California.
The project from Temple Hill moves forward with Woodley portraying the iconic artist, whose rise to fame and tragic death at 27 in 1970, left an indelible mark on the music world. The film will chronicle the life and career of Joplin, a musical icon known for her powerful voice and distinctive style during the late 1960s.
Known for her roles in The Fault in Our Stars and Big Little Lies, Woodley has consistently impressed audiences with her versatility and commitment to her craft, making her a fitting choice to bring Joplin’s complex character to life.
“I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her,” Shailene Woodley mentioned in her statement. (Source: Good Morning America)
The upcoming biopic is expected to explore Joplin’s rise to stardom, her battles with addiction, and the legacy she left behind. It will dive deep into the singer’s life, both on and off the stage, offering an intimate portrayal of a woman who helped define a generation of music.
Woodley’s casting has generated significant buzz, with fans and industry insiders eager to see how she will embody the bold, unapologetic personality that defined Joplin’s career. The actress will also produce the film while portraying the iconic singer.
With production expected to begin soon, the anticipation surrounding the film continues to grow. As Woodley steps into the shoes of one of rock’s greatest icons, this biopic is sure to become one of the most talked-about releases in the coming year.
