Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most familiar faces of South Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 94. The legendary artist breathe her last on Friday afternoon in a Chennai hospital after battling from age-related health complications. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable acting journey in and around all four industries of Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada cinema, since early 1950s and continued for over more than seven years!
Sowcar Janaki Dies After Health Deteriorates
Sowcar Janaki was undergoing treatment for some time due to age-related health issues. Earlier this week, her condition worsened and she was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai. And she was receiving intensive medical care before she passed away at 1:59 PM.
This unfortunate news was confirmed by South Indian Artistes’ Association (SIAA) president and veteran actor Nassar. In a statement, he said, “Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 pm.”
From Shavukaru To More Than 400 Films
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki in 1931, the actress stepped into cinema with iconic director L.V. Prasad’s Telugu film Shavukaru in 1950. The film gave her the screen name Sowcar Janaki, which stayed with her throughout her career.
She later made her Tamil debut with Valayapathi in 1952 and went on to work all around Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. Over the years, she appeared in more than 400 films and shared the screen with prominent stars including N.T. Rama Rao, A. Nageswara Rao, M.G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan and Rajkumar among others.
In later years, Janaki also successfully moved from leading roles to character parts, continuing to leave an impression on audiences across generations. Her memorable performance as Chilakamma in Samsaram Oka Chadarangam remains particularly fondly remembered by Telugu audiences.
A Career That Continued For Seven Decades
Beyond films, Sowcar Janaki also performed in more than 300 stage shows and appeared in television projects. Her final film appearance came in the 2023 Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule, building her own empire of legacy that remains untouched!
And her contribution to Indian cinema earned her several honours including the Kalaimamani and the Padma Shri in 2022.
With her passing, South Indian cinema has lost one of its enduring performers, whose career witnessed and became part of several generations of filmmaking.
