Based on true events at a tourist destination in Kodaikanal, ‘Manjummel Boys’ has drawn inspiration from this backdrop. The film depicts the ordeal of a young member of a friend group who falls into the Guna caves and becomes trapped, while the others scramble to save him against diminishing hope.

Manjummel Boys Real-Life Based Plot

An insider previously revealed to OTTplay that ‘Manjummel Boys’ is based on the real-life rescue of a youth who fell into the Guna caves, also known as Devil’s Kitchen, in Kodaikanal. Over time, numerous tourists lost their lives after accidentally falling into the cave’s depths. Initially named Devil’s Kitchen, the caves gained fame as Guna Caves after being featured in Kamal Haasan’s 1991 hit film “Gunaa.”

It remains uncertain whether the creators of ‘Manjummel Boys’ have drawn inspiration from a specific incident at Guna Caves. However, in 2006, a young man from Ernakulam, Kerala, visiting the caves with his friends, fell 60 feet below. Although his friends alerted authorities, they hesitated to descend into the cave for the rescue. Eventually, one of them bravely tied himself to a rope and descended to rescue his friend. Firefighters later intervened and successfully lifted both individuals to safety after a nearly five-hour-long operation according to OTTplay.

Directed by Chidambaram, the Malayalam survival thriller, stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathy, and Lal Jr in the lead roles. The film was released in theatres on 22 February 2024.
