Actress Nesta Cooper, known for her roles in Travelers and See, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming sci-fi thriller MEM. The film, an adaptation of the award-winning novel by Bethany C. Morrow, is set to explore the complexities of memory, identity, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding technological advancements.
MEM is set in an alternate 1920s Montreal, where memories can be extracted and transplanted into a person’s body, creating a “MEM,” a clone-like being with no identity other than the memory they embody. Cooper will play Elsie, a rare MEM who begins to develop her consciousness and struggles with the societal implications of her existence. The film is expected to delve into deep philosophical questions about what it means to be human and how memories shape our identity.
In a recent statement, Cooper expressed her excitement about the project. “I’m really grateful to be able to collaborate with a writer as prolific as Bethany,” she said in her statement. “Despite the profound and oftentimes horror-like themes in her work, her voice offers an indescribable comfort. Her stories are so deep and full of life that they immerse you completely in their world,” the Canadian actress appreciated Bethany C. Morrow. (Source: The Hollywood Reporter)
Marginal MediaWorks and Sphere Media, based in Los Angeles, are the powerhouses behind the adaptation and the film is scheduled to start filming next year in Montreal. Other than Cooper in the lead role, the additional casting details and release date remain under wraps. Coupled with the innovative storyline, MEM promises to be a cinematic experience that challenges audiences to consider the nature of memory and what it truly means to be human.
Milan Chakraborty and Sanjay M. Sharma produce MEM via Marginal MediaWorks and Peter Van Auker and Jennifer Kawaja will also produce through Sphere Media. The lead actress, writer and director, Nesta Cooper will also serve as the executive producer.
The list of Marginal MediaWorks’ upcoming releases includes Kaminari, written and directed by Mako Kamitsuna, which is a Japanese co-production with Bandai Namco. Another slate is Tierra Whack starrer, Cypher, a thriller which won a Jury Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for U.S. Fiction Film.
With its blend of speculative science fiction and emotional storytelling, MEM is poised to make waves in the film industry. Fans of Nesta Cooper and sci-fi enthusiasts alike are eager to see how this thought-provoking narrative unfolds on the big screen.
