Miracles, Mythology & VFX Heroics

When Karan Johar enters the fray as Presenter for a south production, expectations grow to Baahubali proportions. There is also the lingering respect for Teja Sajja after last year’s Hanu-Man which worked well even outside the Telugu circuit. Does the Rs 60-crore Mirai match the expectations? The Lehren review gives you a quick look at the VFX-laden mytho-thriller.

Mirai Critic Movie Review:

Mirai is no ordinary stick. It’s a divine staff, the use of which baffles rudderless young Super Yodha (Teja Sajja) who must dedicate his life to a mission where the Mirai will work its miracles and help him succeed.

Writer-director-cinematographer Karthik Gattamneni goes time-trotting and globe-trotting. Hark back to the times of Emperor Ashoka, glimpse at Lord Rama and Hanuman. Also go futuristic with set action pieces overloaded with VFX. Move from the Himalayas, Varanasi, Morocco, Hyderabad and Japan to hidden temples, the Kumb Mela and faraway islands.

The target is simple: Super Yodha must save the nine granths or scriptures from falling into the hands of Mahabir, a dark force (Manchu Manoj who must wear black). He has already misused his tantrik powers and gained even more strength from eight granths. Super Yodha must save the ninth.

Amidst the potpourri of special effects, time zones, mythology, fiction and beliefs is one strong emotional core: pregnant mother Ambika (Shriya Saran) who has foreseen the havoc the dark force will unleash on humanity, giving up her newborn baby in a heart-rending moment. It’s the price she personally pays to give destiny room for her son to grow into Super Yodha and save the granths.

Although the mother-son sacrifice is emotionally stirring and Teja Sajja transforms from a reckless youngster to a driven superhero with much credibility, Gattamneni’s storytelling falls short of captivating the viewer. The long-drawn storytelling stretches to an impatient 2 hrs and 45 minutes, making one miss the simplicity of Teja’s Hanu-Man, the romance, the freshness and the straightforwardness of the 2024 superhero movie.

Even if restless, don’t walk away too soon for the end credits also offer a peek into the next instalment.

Mirai Watch Or Not?: While the mix of fantasy sci-fi and mythology will fascinate the Telugu cinema audience and Teja Sajja admirers, the Hindi belt may be underwhelmed.

Mirai Review Score Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (i.e. 2.5/5)
