Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his grand storytelling and visually stunning films has been a prominent figure in Bollywood for decades. Many actors dream of working with him and Manisha Koirala was one of them, who was deeply moved by the script of his first directorial venture story Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). Having recently reunited with him in Netflix’s Heeramandi after 28 years, Manisha had earlier collaborated with Bhansali on 1942: A Love Story (1994) which he wrote. During this time, she read the script of Khamoshi but initially he was keen on considering Madhuri Dixit or Kajol for the lead role. However, Manisha playfully warned him that if they declined, she would take on the role herself.
In a recent interview on Kovid Gupta Films, Manisha recalled the moment she expressed her strong desire to be part of Khamoshi and playfulled warned SLB. She shared, “I was not his (Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s) first choice, so he wanted Madhuri ji or Kajol, and I said this—‘If these two don’t do it, I am going to do it! So, you come to me, you don’t go to anybody else!’” This candid remark reflected her deep connection with the story and ultimately, she became the heart of the film.
Manisha Koirala’s portrayal of Annie, a devoted daughter to a deaf-mute couple, won immense critical acclaim. Her performance resonated with audiences, making Khamoshi a timeless classic. She not only received praise but also won prestigious awards, including the Screen Award for Best Actress and her second consecutive Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. The film remains one of her most celebrated performances, proving her decision to insist on the role was the right one.
