Sometimes, it takes years to understand why we stayed in a relationship, what we were hoping would change and where we may have lost ourselves along the way. Zeenat Aman is now looking back at her marriage to Mazhar Khan with that sense of understanding, rather than regret.
Zeenat Aman Reflects On Her Marriage To Mazhar Khan
In a recent conversation with Between Us By Anamika, legendary actress Zeenat Aman spoke candidly about the choices she made when she was younger. Rather than judging her past, the veteran actress said she now looks at those years with “a lot of compassion.”
“With a lot of compassion. I was young. I made choices on what I believed and what I wanted at that time,” she said. She added, “Some choices served me and some didn’t.”
For Zeenat, growing older has changed the way she sees those decisions. “Age gives you the luxury of looking back without needing to either defend yourself or punish yourself,” she explained.
‘I Personally Stayed Because I Had Made A Commitment’
Zeenat married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985 and the couple had two sons, Azaan and Zahaan. Speaking about why she remained in the marriage despite the difficulties, the actress said, “Relationships are always more complicated than the version that eventually becomes gossip.”
“When I married Mazhar, I was ready to become a mother. And I have spoken openly about that. I believed marriage was the route to building a family and I made my choice accordingly,” she said.
Zeenat further explained, “It taught me about the difference between love and self-abandonment. I personally stayed because I had made a commitment, because we had children and because I had hoped that things would change.”
Eventually, she realised that supporting someone should not mean losing yourself. “Eventually, I understood that you cannot save another person by destroying yourself,” she said, while adding that Mazhar remained the father of her children and she did not want to speak derogatorily about him.
Zeenat On Infidelity And Private Lives
Addressing discussions around infidelity in Bollywood, Zeenat said, “Infidelity is not uniquely a Bollywood phenomenon. It is a human failing.”
She also pointed out how easily private relationships become public today, saying that turning someone’s heartbreak into gossip benefits nobody.
Looking back, Zeenat’s words are less about revisiting old controversies and more about understanding the woman she was, the choices she made and the lessons those years left behind.
