Foods & Beverages To Avoid During Pregnancy

From unripe papaya to alcohol, here is the list of foods and beverages women should avoid during pregnancy-

When it comes to pregnancy women are often advised to seek a healthy diet and lifestyle for the health of their fetus. While there are plenty of good stuff and food that can help nourish you and your child, there are also some food and beverage stuff that pregnant women should highly refrain from consuming during their pregnancy.

Here is the list of foods and beverages women should avoid during pregnancy-

  1. Unripe Papaya

Although eating papaya is safe during pregnancy, however pregnant women should it avoided if the papaya is green or semi-ripe. It is because the unripe or semi-ripe papaya has a lot of latex which according to studies can cause uterine contractions which as a result, contribute to premature labor.

2. Alcohol

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy should be highly avoided. Since as per the research, drinking alcohol during pregnancy increases the risk of issues like miscarriage, premature birth and your baby having a low birthweight.

3. Raw Meat

Although eating meat is no problem, however eating raw or uncooked meat in pregnancy should definitely be avoided. Raw or uncooked meat contains harmful germs that can cause infection and food poisoning which can harm the baby.

4. Raw Fish

While fish is recommended to pregnant ladies, eating “raw fish” is highly against the idea. Pregnant women should avoid eating dishes like “Sushi” which contains raw or undercooked fish. Raw or undercooked fish are more likely to contain parasites or bacteria that could harm the child.

5. Raw Sprouts

Just like raw meat and raw fish, raw sprouts are also one of the dishes that pregnant women should avoid as they can cause food poisoning due to harmful bacteria such as E. It’s only safe to eat bean sprouts while you’re pregnant if they’re thoroughly cooked.

6. Raw Eggs

It is safe for pregnant women to eat eggs as long as they are properly cooked. Meanwhile, they should highly avoid eating raw eggs in foods such as aioli, homemade mayonnaise, cake batter or mousse due to a risk of salmonella.

7. Unpasturized Milk

Pregnant women should also avoid any type of unpasteurized stuff. For example, they should avoid consuming unpasteurized milk because it contains bacteria Listeria which can cause miscarriage, or illness, or death of the newborn baby. They are also advised not to eat anything made with raw milk.
