Kangana Ranaut Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Zohran Mamdani’s Identity

Kangana Ranaut has expressed her disapproval of Mira Nair's son, Zohran Mamdani, regarding his purported anti-Hindu position, citing a protest event as a reference.

Mira Nair’s son, Zohran Mamdani, might be aspiring to the position of Mayor of New York City; however, he will not receive Kangana Ranaut’s support, should it hold any significance. The actor-turned-politician took to Twitter on Thursday to articulate her views on him, commenting on his name and what she perceives to be his anti-Hindu stance.

Here is the most recent update regarding Kangana Ranaut’s contentious comments directed at Indian American politician Zohran Mamdani:

On June 26, 2025, Kangana Ranaut vehemently criticized Zohran Kwame Mamdani (the son of filmmaker Mira Nair), who has recently emerged victorious in the Democratic primary race in New York City. Ranaut remarked that his name “sounds more Pakistani than Indian,” and asserted that “he is prepared to eradicate Hinduism.”

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a socialist from New York with Indian heritage, secured the Democratic nomination for mayor of NYC by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Ranaut’s assertion connects Mamdani’s name to a Pakistani identity, suggesting a lack of cultural loyalty. Additionally, she claimed that he represents a danger to Hinduism, which has sparked significant backlash.

She added her perspective on Zohran. “His mother is Mira Nair, one of our finest filmmakers, Padmashri, a cherished and renowned daughter who was born and raised in great Bharat and is now based in New York. She married Mehmood Mamdani, who is of Gujarati descent and a distinguished author. Naturally, their son is named Zohran, and he appears to have a more Pakistani identity than an Indian one… what has become of his Hindu heritage or lineage? Now he seems poised to eradicate Hinduism, astonishing! This narrative is prevalent everywhere.”

She did express admiration for Mira, stating: “On a different note, I have had the pleasure of meeting Mira ji on a few occasions; congratulations to the parents.” These remarks have sparked controversy throughout India and among the Indian diaspora, focusing on matters of religious identity, nationalism, and the freedom of political expression abroad.
