The upcoming Hindi family drama Meethe Mai Kya Hai, directed by Radhika Bansal and starring Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangadi, and Ayesha Raza Mishra, is set to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2026. Exploring the complexities of family relationships and the familiar dynamics that shape them, the film aims to capture the warmth, chaos, and emotions of Indian families. During an exclusive conversation with the cast as part of the film’s promotions, Radhika opened up about the thought behind the film’s unique title and the personal experience that inspired its story.
When asked how the idea for the title Meethe Mai Kya Hai came about, Radhika revealed that it was decided quite late in the process. The team had initially considered different titles, but after the shooting was completed, they settled on a line from the film that eventually became the title.
The director explained that the line is one of her favourite parts of the film and that audiences would understand its significance when they watched it. What makes the title special is its familiarity, as it reflects the kind of expressions and banter that people often hear and use within their own families.
Radhika shared that the film’s title connects with the everyday conversations that take place at home, including the playful exchanges between siblings and other family members. She believes that these familiar moments make the story relatable, allowing audiences to recognise aspects of their own family dynamics on screen.
Ritwik Bhowmik also added to the conversation, pointing out that the phrase is something people use in their personal lives. Its importance goes beyond being just a title, as it holds contextual significance within the film. Since the expression is familiar to many, it helps establish an immediate connection with the audience.
Radhika Bansal Reveals How Her First Diwali Away from Family Inspired the Film
Speaking about the inspiration behind the story, Radhika revealed that the idea came from a personal experience. A few years ago, she moved to Singapore and spent her first Diwali away from her family, including her parents and cousins. The experience left her feeling nostalgic and made her miss celebrating the festival with her loved ones.
She recalled how Western cinema has several films associated with Christmas, such as Home Alone, Love Actually and The Family Stone, which audiences revisit during the holiday season to experience the festive spirit. This made her wonder why Indian cinema did not have more films centred on Diwali and the emotions surrounding the festival.
The thought of creating a Diwali film that audiences could connect with during the festive season became the starting point for Meethe Mai Kya Hai. Radhika wanted to capture the warmth of family gatherings, the joy of celebrating together, and the emotions that emerge when relatives come together.
However, she also wanted to explore the more complicated side of Indian family relationships. According to the director, families often have a strong sense of involvement in one another’s lives, with members expressing opinions, offering advice, and sometimes crossing personal boundaries. While these interactions can lead to misunderstandings and hurtful exchanges, they often come from a place of love and concern.
Radhika wanted to portray these dynamics with empathy rather than judgement. She explained that family members sometimes say things they do not truly mean, simply because they feel deeply connected to one another and believe they have a role to play in each other’s lives.
For her, this is also a part of the love language within Indian families, where affection, concern, disagreements and playful banter often exist together. Through the film, she wanted to present these relationships in a way that audiences could recognise from their own homes.
Talking about the writing process, Radhika also shared that while some stories come with immediate clarity, others can leave a writer feeling stuck. Fortunately, the writing process for Meethe Mai Kya Hai progressed smoothly, and the story came together on time.
With a familiar title rooted in everyday conversations and a story inspired by the director’s personal experience of missing Diwali with her family, Meethe Mai Kya Hai aims to capture the warmth, chaos, and emotional complexity of Indian family relationships.
