Mumbai Diaries 2 Critic Review:

Last season, director Nikkhil Advani showed the doctors and staff of Bombay General Hospital (BGH) respond with unwavering dedication to the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai even as they grappled with their personal anxieties. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Subramaniam (Prakash Belawadi) had held his flock together as Dr Kaushik Oberoi (Mohit Raina) was torn between his patients and his wife Ananya (Tina Desai), on duty at the Taj where the terrorists had struck. TV journalist Mansi Hirani (Shreya Dhanwanthary) had sneaked around for a story and built a TRP-fetching case of negligence against Dr Kaushik Oberoi for the death of an ATS officer.

Six months later, says Nikkhil Advani, Mumbai is submerged in an unprecedented cloudburst, as he moves the new season forward with the same set of doctors and the city battling a new disaster.

Just to be clear:

The terror attack happened in 2008 on 26/11.

The Mumbai floods which devastated the city northwards from Mahim Creek, leaving the southern part completely untouched, happened in 2005 on 26/07. Three years before the terror attack, not six months later.

Once it’s accepted that what’s unfolding before you is fiction, watch on. For Nikkhil (with writers Yash Chettija and Persis Sodawaterwala) lays out quite a spread of dramatic events.

The ATS officer’s widow has dragged Dr Kaushik Oberoi to court for the murder of her husband. Guilty or not, screams Mansi as public polls come in.

With rains lashing Mumbai and flooding most parts of it, Oberoi’s battle is between suspension until the final court verdict and pregnant wife Ananya who’s caught in swirling waters somewhere near Sion.

Last season, there was a glimpse of the trauma Social Services Director Dr Chitra Das (Konkona Sen Sharma) had escaped from. It’s full blown over eight new episodes as husband Dr Saurav Chandra (Parambrata Chattopadhyay) arrives at BGH as a part of a delegation from London. Chitra shows all the classic syndromes of victims of domestic abuse, cowering like a frightened mouse and believing he’s a changed man.

All the lead characters continue with their characteristics. Privileged Dr Diya Parekh (Natasha Bharadwaj) must prove she’s as dedicated as the rest, Dr Ahaan Mirza (Satyajeet Dubey) carries a torch for Chitra, Dr Sujata Ajawale (Mrunmayee Deshpande) bends rules to stay committed to her patients and Chief Nurse Sneha Cherian (Balaji Gauri) combines efficiency and proficiency with a protective streak. Making everybody’s lives miserable are shady Jadhav (Sanjay S Narvekar) and Yogesh Kulkarni (Sharad Ponkshe) who come in the way of the doctors performing their duty. But when the going gets tough and human lives have to be put above all else, Dr Subramaniam stands tall, reminding everyone that he’s the one who calls the shots.

This season, Nikkhil introduces several new social issues. Child abuse, domestic abuse and today’s favourite flavour, the transgender offspring who must be understood by his/her parents. Oh, oh, there’s also the awakening of the conscience of the TV journo.

While all the actors who play doctors perform with the dedication they show at BGH, Kalyanee Mulay as the mother of transgender Sandeep-turned-Sanjana stands out as a welcome addition.

However, some of the sequences are stretched to test viewer patience and the stats at the end refer to the 2005 floods, not to the fictionalised events of what happened six months after the terror attack. But give it to Nikkhil for building a medical world of his own like ER, New Amsterdam and good old Grey’s Anatomy, and manning it with characters whose personal and professional battles grow on you.

Mumbai Diaries 2 – Watch Or Not?: Watch it for the issues it raises including the last note: Climate Change is for real.
