Who Was Amar Singh Chamkila?
Born on July 1, 1960, Chamkila faced poverty in Ludhiana’s Dugri village. Initially named Dhani Ram, he worked as a laborer to support his family. Despite this, his passion for music led him to join drama groups, where he mastered the harmonium and tumbi by age 16.
Amar Singh Chamkila’s Career
While working, Dhani Ram pursued his musical dreams. Teaming up with folk singer Shinda, he assisted with stage setups and songwriting, leading to a successful career as Shinda’s songwriter. Their collaboration flourished when they toured Canada in the early 1980s, recording four songs with Sonia, Shinda’s partner, which propelled Dhani Ram to stardom as Chamkila.
The music label released another tape titled “Baapu Saada Gum Ho Gaya,” featuring Chamkila and Sonia. Their talent resonated with audiences, leading to high demand for their performances. Despite their success, Chamkila received Rs 200 per performance, while Sonia earned Rs 600. This pay discrepancy led to their separation.
After separating from Sonia, Chamkila teamed up with popular singer Amarjot Kaur, known for her work with Kuldeep Manak. Their collaboration became influential in Punjabi music, with their debut album, “Bhul Gayi Main Ghund Kadna,” featuring the hit song “Pahile Lalkare Naal Main Darr Gayi.” Chamkila’s unique style and lyrics further cemented his status as a musical icon among Punjabi fans.
Chamkila wrote most of his songs, delving into themes like relationships, alcohol, and drugs. His music gained popularity not only in Punjab but also internationally, leading to high demand for his performances, surpassing other singers.
Amar Singh Chamkila’s Assassination
On March 8, 1988, Chamkila and Amarjot were shot by unknown assailants on motorcycles as they exited their car in Mehsampur, Punjab, around 2 PM. They died on the spot, and despite thorough investigations, no one has been apprehended for the shooting, leaving the perpetrators unidentified to this day.
