Kanye West, the controversial rapper and artist, has disclosed that he identifies as autistic, not bipolar, in a series of messages sent to his friend and Tesla co-founder, Elon Musk. The 46-year-old musician, who previously announced his bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2018, later raised concerns about being “mentally misdiagnosed.”
Kanye enlisted his friend Ian Connor to share screenshots of his text messages with Elon Musk on Instagram. In these messages, Kanye discussed not only his health but also his concerns about his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and his children.
The texts, posted on Wednesday, revealed Kanye’s desire to have a conversation with Elon. He acknowledged that Elon owed him nothing but emphasized that if they were to engage in a discussion, the nature of their relationship would need to change. Kanye claimed, “I’m not bipolar. I have signs of autism from my (2002) car accident.” He was referring to a car crash that ultimately inspired his hit song ‘Through the Wire,’ during which he rapped with his jaw wired shut after undergoing major surgery.
In 2022, Kanye had previously tweeted, “So I will say this again: I was mentally misdiagnosed and nearly drugged out of my mind to make me a manageable, well-behaved celebrity.” In his latest messages to Elon, he also expressed his frustration about Kim Kardashian allegedly keeping their children from him.
Kanye concluded his messages by criticizing Elon for describing him as a “friend” in order to attract his audience to Elon’s platform, which Kanye referred to as “struggling.”
Kanye’s stylist friend, Ian, shared these messages as Kanye had been banned from the X platform following a series of controversial statements.
The motivation behind Kanye’s decision to share these messages remains unclear, as he has been on vacation in Europe with his 28-year-old wife, Bianca Censori. Despite his claims that Kim was keeping their children away from him, he was recently photographed with his seven-year-old son Saint at a soccer game in Italy. Kanye and Kim’s divorce was finalized in 2022, and the rapper secretly married model Bianca in December of the same year.
