The 51-year-old actress was asked about the fan theories that the long-running ABC medical drama is nearing its end when she was stepping out from the 2021 Emmy Awards on September 19.
In response, she admitted to Entertainment Tonight, “They’re not far off.” She continues, “I mean, I’ve been trying to get away for years. I have been trying.” She added, “It’s not because I haven’t been trying. I have strong relationships at the network and they have been very, very good to me, and have incentivized me to stay.”
However, the actress refused to say if there is a specific end date in mind.
Ellen further stated that the show will continue, “as long as there’s something to do, creatively.” “Miraculously, we keep coming up with ways to have a reason to stay and if there’s a reason, that warrants it.” Although, she didn’t seem too excited with the idea of a 19th season. She informed Entertainment Tonight that, “Oh please! Oh my goodness, can we pray together?”
However, the character of Ellen is in a coma in season 17 and dealing with the effects of coronavirus, and the actress felt it provided a safe way of working and a way to keep things relevant for the audience. She said, “We had to work around COVID obviously and so we had to be creative and think of ways to keep the show going and still be safe. The coma was one and then the beach and the dream sequences was another and of course, bringing back people who had passed on to the other side.” “I think it just resonates with people right? Everyone wants to have one last conversation with someone they’ve lost,” she continues.

Ellen who plays Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy’s recent comment comes after she revealed that she has no desire to act again after Grey’s. From her statement fans observed, there’s the possibility that Ellen will leave the show. Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on Thursday, September 30 at 9 pm ET on ABC.
