Avatar: The Way of Water has broken new records. James Cameron’s sequel recently surpassed $2 billion globally at the box office in just six weeks. The latest record-breaking achievement makes the epic science fiction film’s sequel ‘the six highest-grossing film of all time.’
Avatar sequel is reportedly ‘one of the most expensive films ever made, with a budget estimated at $350 million or more.’ The latest news comes after Cameron confirmed there will be Avatar sequels after saying that the latest film would definitely make the profit needed to continue the franchise.
The highly-anticipated was released on 16 December 2022 and it soon became the highest-grossing film of 2022. The sequel surpassed the blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick, following the latest box office totals. The Avatar sequel has already made more than $1.5 billion globally total since its debut in theatres on December 16.
Moreover, the mostly computer-generated film also recently crosses Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home worldwide box office collection. Avatar: The Way Of Water also took over the number 6 place as Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $1.921B worldwide throughout its theatrical run.
Notably, Avatar 2 remains among the five biggest overseas releases ever, left behind, Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic and Avengers: Infinity War. The sequel has already beaten Infinity War, whose worldwide collection was $1.37 Billion, to jump up a notch on the international chart. Additionally, Avatar: The Way Of Water is already the top release Internationally during the pandemic era.
Apart from the film’s achievements at the box office, the sequel is also doing great at award ceremonies. Recently, Avatar: The Way of Water bagged Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Visual Effects. For the unversed, Avatar: The Way Of Water follows Jake Sully and Ney’tiri as they have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together.
