James Cameron’s new sci-fi movie, Avatar: Way of Water, is doing well at the box office so far. Though there was a dip at the domestic box office, the film has grossed great numbers globally.
As of Thursday, the film had totalled more than $609.7 million globally. The latest figures were not up to Cameron’s mark but it was a little more than one-fourth. However, the Avatar sequel’s second week might help clarify its longer-term box-office possibilities. Meanwhile, the sequel to the 2011 film Puss in Boots, a spin-off of the Shrek franchise, came in at No. 2 as Avatar: The Way of Water easily held at No. 1 with $14.3 million Tuesday.
Though a long-awaited sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time is currently doing good, it fell short of initial box-office expectations during its debut. The film collected just $134 million domestically, short of the $175 million that industry analysts had predicted, and just under the $135 million to $150 million range that Disney had forecast.
However, the Avatar box office collection was just the opposite of its sequel. Released in December 2009, Avatar had broken multiple box office records in various markets. The film became the highest-grossing movie of all time and the fastest movie to gross $1 billion through $2.5 billion worldwide. Avatar is also the highest-grossing movie in history so far.

James Cameron’s latest movie Avatar: The Way of Water features, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell.
Avatar: The Way Of Water follows Jake Sully and Ney’tiri as they have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
