When Shah Rukh Khan Was Asked About His Views On Intolerance In India: ‘There Is Intolerance, There Is Extreme Intolerance’

He Emphasized The Importance Of Being Secular In A Diverse Nation And Criticized Those Who Spread Words Without Thought

Shah Rukh Khan, an icon in Indian cinema, has maintained his stature as one of its biggest stars for decades. Throughout his career, he has upheld his dignity and refrained from commenting on issues that could impact his film releases. However, there was a moment when he candidly shared his views on the state of the country.

In 2015, during an interview with Rajdeep Sardesai for India Today, Shah Rukh Khan openly addressed the growing issue of intolerance in the country. He acknowledged, “There is intolerance, there is extreme intolerance… there is growing intolerance.”

He emphasized the importance of being secular in a diverse nation and criticized those who spread words without thought.

He added, “People put words into the air even before thinking and here is a secular country. Here’s a country perhaps for the last 10 years that is on the cusp of going beyond what we think.”

He concluded, “It’s stupid to be intolerant. And this is my biggest issue. Not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime you can do as a patriot.”

More recently, controversies arose around his film “Pathaan,” specifically the song “Besharam Rang,” due to objections from a fanatic group. This group took issue with Deepika Padukone’s green and saffron colored outfit, associating it with indecency and alleging it promotes an anti-Hindu sentiment.

Looking ahead, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for his upcoming film “Jawan,” set to release on September 7. According to media reports, the film’s trailer is expected to drop this week. The film’s preview was recently unveiled, quickly garnering millions of views on social media. Directed by Atlee, “Jawan” promises a dynamic blend of action, drama, and comedy. Presented by Red Chillies Entertainment and produced by Gauri Khan, with Gaurav Verma as co-producer, the movie features an impressive ensemble cast, including Nayanthara, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Vijay Sethupathi, and other talented actors.
