Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor two legendary actors whose names resonate through the annals of Indian cinema. Their prowess on screen was undeniable, but what truly stood out was their enduring friendship, one that transcended the bounds of professional rivalry.
Little known to many, both Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor shared more than just a passion for acting. They hailed from the same city, Peshawar, in present-day Pakistan, and even attended the same college in Bombay, now Mumbai. Despite their rivalry making occasional headlines, their camaraderie remained unblemished, a testament to their deep-rooted bond.
A poignant instance of this bond was shared by Dilip Kumar’s wife, Saira Bano, in a heartfelt Instagram post. She reminisced about a moment when Dilip Kumar was overcome with emotion upon witnessing Raj Kapoor lying unconscious in a hospital bed, stricken by a heart attack.
“Raj Kapoor and Dilip Sahib loved each other in the same measure as they loved their own siblings,” Saira wrote. “They both shared thoughts, emotions, and secret aspirations more with each other than perhaps anyone in their own respective families.”
Their friendship was characterized by mutual respect and support. Raj Kapoor once cut short his trip to London just to attend a function hosted by Dilip Kumar, showcasing the depth of their bond. Saira fondly recalled how, at their wedding, Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor danced joyously, symbolizing the warmth between the two families.
Despite their professional rivalry, marked by healthy competition, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor rooted for each other’s success. They took pride in each other’s achievements, as evidenced by Raj Kapoor’s gesture of sending a bouquet of roses to Dilip Kumar upon the release of “SHAKTI,” accompanied by a note proclaiming, “Long Live The King.”
However, it was during a moment of crisis that the true essence of their friendship shone through. When Raj Kapoor suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized, Dilip Kumar rushed to his side without hesitation.
“He said to Raj Ji, ‘I have just come back from Peshawar and brought back the khushboo of Chapli kebabs to tempt you. We will go together and walk through the bazaar as we used to and enjoy the kebabs and rotis. Raj wake up and stop acting. I know you are a great actor, but you have to take me with you to the courtyard of the house in Peshawar.’ Dilip Sahib’s voice was now choking, and tears were streaming down as he spoke to his dearest friend, lying unconscious on the bed.”
