Aamir Khan’s Deepfake Video: Actor Files Complaint, Police Registers FIR

In the alleged 27-second clip, apparently edited using AI technology, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan discusses the importance of avoiding rhetoric.

The Mumbai Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against an unknown individual regarding a deepfake video featuring Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, allegedly promoting a political party, according to an official statement.

As per a PTI report, the FIR was lodged on Wednesday at the Khar police station after Mr. Khan’s office filed a complaint, citing relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), and provisions of the Information Technology Act, according to the official.

In the alleged 27-second clip, apparently edited using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Mr. Khan is depicted discussing the importance of avoiding rhetoric (jumla). The deepfake video portrays the actor in what appears to be a scene from an episode of his television show, ‘Satyamev Jayate,’ dating back a decade.

As per PTI, a spokesperson for Mr. Khan stated on Tuesday that while the actor had previously contributed to electoral awareness through Election Commission campaigns, he had never endorsed any political party. “We want to clarify that Mr. Aamir Khan has never endorsed any political party throughout his 35-year career. He has dedicated his efforts to raising awareness through Election Commission public awareness campaigns for many past elections”.

“We are alarmed by the recent viral video alleging that Aamir Khan is promoting a particular political party. He would like to clarify that this is a fake video and totally untrue. He has reported the matter to various authorities related to this issue, including filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai Police,” the spokesperson said.
