It has been three years since the passing of Krishnakumar Kunnath, known to all as KK. Undoubtedly his songs continue to be a part of our playlists, reminding us of his unforgettable voice. While KK was widely loved for playback hits like Tadap Tadap, Dil Ibaadat, Ankhon Me Teri, Zara Sa and more his independent music also left a deep mark. KK ‘s debut album Pal, released in 1999 under Sony Music, still holds a special place among listeners. Songs like Aap Ki Dua, Yaaron, and Pyaar Ke Pal from the album are often played during nostalgic and emotional moments. However, what many don’t know is that the album took two years to see the light of day.

KK On The Delay Of ‘Pal’

In a throwback interview with Lehren, KK spoke about how many assumed he had an easy entry into the Indian music industry but the reality was quite different. He recalled how Sony Music approached him in 1997 to sign him for Pal but the album was delayed due to various reasons. Sharing his experience, he said, “Ek saal tak kuch nahi hua fir 1999 mein jaake release hua album. Toh har kisika ek waqt hota hai toh kismat mein jo hota hai, vahi hota hai.(For a year, nothing happened, and then in 1999, the album was finally released. Everyone has their own time, and what is meant to happen will happen.)

Talking about his expectations after signing the contract, he added, “1997 mein sign kar liya, maine kaha ki ‘ah ho jayega sab’ aisa nahi hota hai. (I signed in 1997 and thought, ‘Oh, everything will happen quickly.’ But it doesn’t work that way.) He further reflected on how life never goes exactly as planned. “It’s never that how you think life or how you wanted it to go, it’s never like that. It’s always like how it’s destined.”

During the same interview, KK spoke about how Tadap Tadap from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam gave him recognition in Bollywood. He later went on to sing for Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and many other films, adding more milestones to his journey.

Pal remains one of the most successful solo albums by an Indian pop artist. Released on April 16, 1999, it was composed and arranged by Lesle Lewis with lyrics penned by renowned lyiricist Mehboob. Every track was sung by KK, making it a timeless classic.

As his death anniversary approaches, revisiting his interview and performances feels like the perfect way to honour his legacy. In this throwback conversation, he not only spoke about his career but also sang Pal, Tadap Tadap, and Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana, giving fans a moment they’ll cherish forever.
