Veteran superstar actress and politician Jaya Bachchan has voiced her opinion on the ongoing controversy involving stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Addressing the media at Parliament, she questioned the restrictions on free speech in the country. “If there is a restriction on speaking, what will become of you? You are anyway in a bad situation. There are restrictions on you. You would be told to speak just on this and nothing else, that do not interview Jaya Bachchan,” she said.
The controversy erupted after Kunal Kamra made satirical comments about Eknath Shinde in his show. A group from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) responded by vandalizing a comedy venue in Mumbai. An FIR has been filed against both Kamra and those involved in the vandalism. The actress did not hold back while addressing the issue. Jaya Bachchan directly took a swipe at Eknath Shinde ’s political switch, saying, “Where is freedom of speech? There is freedom of action only when there is a ruckus – beat up the opposition, rape women, murder them. What else? You (Eknath Shinde) left your real party and formed another party for power. Isn’t that an insult of Balasaheb?”
Her statement resonated with many who believe that curbing free speech is a growing issue. Kamra’s remarks were based on a spoof song from Dil To Pagal Hai, in which he hinted at Shinde’s political moves. While Kamra never mentioned Shinde directly, his references were clear enough to provoke strong reactions. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has also defended Kamra, asserting that the comedian’s words reflect the views of many in the opposition. “Every word said by him is correct. He simply presented it in poetic form,” Sawant stated.
The vandalism at the comedy club was widely condemned with many arguing that responding to satire with violence is unjustified. The case currently under investigation.
