Meet Khatoon Dizale, a legendary Bollywood hairdresser whose story feels like a hidden chapter of cinema itself. Having worked with icons like Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Raj Kapoor, Hema Malini, and Aruna Irani, her journey began in an unexpected way who was raised by none other than actress Nargis Dutt.
In a heartfelt throwback conversation with Lehren, Khatoon recalled how her childhood at Nargis’ home shaped her life. She revealed that it was through Nargis that she got married and eventually found her path into films at the time when she was facing challenges in life, actor-producer Anwar Hussain stepped in and asked her to do the hair of actress Zaheeda Hussain. He even wrote a letter recommending her and that marked her first step as a hairdresser in the industry, where she earned her debut film as a hairstylist was with actors Dev Anand and Zaheeda, followed by work for actress Kumkum, especially in Bhojpuri films.
Khatoon further shared a memorable story about meeting Aruna Irani by chance. One day, Aruna’s regular hairdresser was absent and Khatoon stepped in to help, and that small moment turned into a lifelong collaboration lasting for 25 years. She fondly remembered how Aruna treated her like family, saying, “Aruna ji mujhe sabse aise introduce karti thi yeh kehke ki ‘yeh meri behen hai’ aur kabhi aisa nahi bola ki yeh hairdresser hai.”
Khatoon also styled actresses like Mala Sinha, Zeb Rehman, Meena Kumari, and Vyjayanthimala, working on classics like Pakeezah and Sangam. Though she admitted being nervous working for such great stars at first but indeed her talent soon spoke for itself.
In one of the most interesting parts of her career, the Bollywood hairdresser revealed that she was styling a young girl named Madhuri Dixit and it was she who introduced her to filmmaker Subhash Ghai. That meeting eventually led to Madhuri’s major break in films.
Khatoon Dizale also recalled her fun times working with Bollywpod king Shah Rukh Khan, describing how humble and friendly he was on sets. “Shah Rukh masti karta tha, itna bada hero mere se masti kar raha tha. Main toh kuch nahi hu unke saamne, par unhone mujhe itna izzat diya mujhe bahut acha laga,” she said emotionally.
Reflecting on her long career, Khatoon said she earned more love than money. “Maine zyada paisa kamaya nahi hai, par bahut pyaar kamaya. Mujhe izzat chahiye , wahi karodo rupya hogaya na,” she expressed. Calling herself “pyaar ki bhooki, paise ki nahi,” Khatoon also said that if someone loved her truly, she would give her life for them.
In her closing thoughts, the Bollywood hairdresser shared how blessed she felt to work in an era filled with warmth and respect. Despite working with huge stars, she said everyone remained grounded and kind. “That time was different. It’s hard to find that today,” she reflected.
Her story reminds us that behind every glamorous actor stands a hardworking artist who quietly shaped the magic we saw on screen and a rare reminder that love and respect leave a legacy far richer than money ever could.
