The buzz surrounding around ‘Barbie’ sequel is totally evident, as recently on Friday The Hollywood Reporter’s reports skyrocketed fans’ excitement. The sources close to the publication suggested that a Barbie Sequel might be in the making, citing insider sources suggesting Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are developing a story concept. However, Warner Bros. quickly denied the claims. Despite this, The Statesman publication has now confirmed that discussions for the sequel are indeed underway, though still in early stages.
Director Greta Gerwig, whose creative direction turned Barbie into a $1.4 billion global success has hinted in the past that any sequel would only move forward if she found a story worth telling. During her acceptance speech at the Time Women of the Year event in March 2024, Gerwig stated, “If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.” Reports indicate that she and Baumbach have now settled on an idea and presented it to Warner Bros.

While an official deal is yet to be signed, early talks about scripting and scheduling have reportedly begun. Sources suggest Baumbach could start writing once the paperwork is finalized.
Balancing schedules might be tricky for the creative duo, while Noah Baumbach is in post-production for his upcoming Netflix film starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, and Greta is busy prepping her upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
Margot Robbie, who starred as Barbie and co-produced the film through LuckyChap Entertainment is expected to reprise her role. She has praised Greta Gerwig’s unique storytelling, calling her vision the heart of Barbie’s success.
Fans eager for a sequel will have to wait for official announcement but the buzz around the potential Barbie Sequel has already sparked anticipation.
