The buzz surrounding a potential ‘Barbie’ sequel has been growing ever since the first live-action Barbie movie hit theaters in 2023. The film, starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig, achieved massive success raking in $1.4 billion worldwide despite releasing alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Fans have been eager for a follow-up and reports recently hinted that plans for a sequel might already be in motion.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Greta Gerwig and her co-writer Noah Baumbach were said to have pitched a concept for a second installment to Warner Bros. The report even claimed that the project was in its early stages. However, these claims were swiftly dismissed by Warner Bros.
In response to the speculation, Warner Bros. and representatives for Gerwig and Baumbach clarified their stance. “There is no legitimacy to this reporting,” stated the filmmakers’ representatives. A Warner Bros. spokesperson echoed this, labeling THR’s report as “inaccurate”.
While the studio has not confirmed any plans for a ‘Barbie’ sequel, the rumour mill continues to stir up. Fans were quick to catch onto the idea, hoping for another journey to Barbie Land. However, without an official announcement any news about a potential sequel remains speculative. If the rumours were true, THR suggested that Baumbach might begin drafting the script, which would then be passed to Gerwig. However, with Warner Bros.’ firm denial, the future of a ‘Barbie’ sequel seems uncertain for now.
The first Barbie film was groundbreaking in many ways, becoming Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film of all time. Its simultaneous release with Oppenheimer created the cultural phenomenon known as ‘Barbenheimer’, with audiences flocking to see both movies as a double feature.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Barbie will make her way back to the big screen or not.
