Uncut ‘Sholay’ to Make World Premiere at Italian Film Festival

Bollywood’s legendary film Sholay—featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra—is poised for a grand comeback with the world premiere of its completely restored, unedited version on June 27 at the esteemed Il Cinema Ritrovato festival in Bologna’s open-air Piazza Maggiore.

What is new in the restored edition?

The original ending has been reinstated—where Thakur eliminates Gabbar, as opposed to the previously censored alternative in which Gabbar is apprehended. Scenes that were previously deleted have been reintroduced for the first time in decades.

A meticulous three-year restoration has been undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films, utilizing archival negatives sourced from Mumbai and Iron Mountain in London, along with expert consultation to ensure the correct frame ratio and cinematic fidelity.

Amitabh Bachchan reflects on the film’s journey—from initial skepticism to its iconic status—describing it as an “emotional roller coaster,” and expresses his hope that the restored version will captivate a new generation. Dharmendra refers to Sholay as the “eighth wonder of the world” and reminisces about his experiences—ranging from being considered for the roles of Gabbar or Thakur to his preference for Veeru. He also highlights his favorite scenes, including those featuring the tank and the temple.

Why choose Italy and why at this moment?

Il Cinema Ritrovato is celebrated worldwide for presenting restored cinematic masterpieces. This screening aligns with the 50th anniversary of Sholay and offers fans what they have long awaited: the director’s original vision.

What is in store for the future? A 4K theatrical re-release in India is scheduled for Independence Day (August 15), which will feature the restored version and the original ending. Previously, the film saw a resurgence of interest with the 3D re-release in 2014, but this latest restoration emphasizes historical accuracy rather than visual effects.

Premiere: June 27 in Bologna, Italy, at Il Cinema Ritrovato. First public screening of the original conclusion and deleted scenes—more intense, unrefined, and emotional. A restoration born from passion—signifying Sholay’s revival as one of the most significant Indian films of all time.

This occasion transcends mere nostalgia—it represents a cinematic reclamation, reinstating Sholay to its authentic, unadulterated legacy and providing audiences globally with a new perspective to appreciate its legendary magnificence.
