“With Heavy Hearts…” Family Confirms Eric Dane’s Passing Months After ALS Diagnosis

Eric Dane, best known for Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at 53 after battling ALS. His family shared an emotional statement about his final days.

Eric Dane, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has passed away at the age of 53. The actor died on Thursday afternoon, nearly ten months after revealing that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neurone disease.

In an official statement, his family shared, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”

They added, “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The statement continued, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Dane became widely loved for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy. What started as a short appearance turned into a long-running role across multiple seasons. Years later, he found a new generation of fans as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria.

Even after his diagnosis, he continued working. In April, he told People magazine, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

But he missed the 2025 Emmys tribute to Grey’s Anatomy. Speaking to The Washington Post, he explained, “ALS is a nasty disease … So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head.” He admitted he was upset about missing that moment.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane began acting in the early 1990s. Over the years, he appeared in shows like Charmed and films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. He also partnered with ALS organizations to raise awareness.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart and their daughters.
