As ‘Sone do’ plays sombrely in the background and a dog-soldier is laid to rest, humans-and-doggie moments accompany the opening credits.
There are two starkly different tracks.
Pet Momo has gone missing. He used to bark in sync with the blowing of the conch at the family puja every day. Young geeky Apu (Mahi Rai) who can solve Rubik’s Cube without looking at it, won’t accept the weak response of SHO Yusuf Ansari (Vijay Mishra) whose police station is full of pictures of missing dogs. Mom (Geeta Agarwal Sharma) has accepted the inevitable when she unties the knot in her saree (tied as a prayer to Lord Hanuman to find Momo) but Apu and his tech-savvy mind won’t give up so soon.
It leads to a chase with bad cops and good, and a truck packed with nabbed dogs waiting to cross the border. It’s a large-scale dog smuggling racket.
In another city, Caesar, the dog at a construction site, won’t stop barking. Prince (Nikhil Kumar), an underage labourer, has gone missing. The daroga (Rajesh Kumar) may be inept but the workers and their learned sympathiser Masterji (Pankaj Tripathi) doggedly follow all leads. Cleverer than all the humans is Caesar who sniffs out the kidnapper and pins him down. It’s an organ thieving racket that must be busted.
Writer-director Amit Rai has some warm moments with furry highlights like Caesar summoning all the street dogs to help him. 101 Dalmatians had one such doggie communication, Rai borrows it.
He weaves in ‘Khadoos’ (Pavan Raj Malhotra), a senior cop who gradually warms up to schoolboy Apu’s tech skills and aids him. Rai has a few sharp turns that make the chase to the border exciting.
However, while there are highs in both tracks and they all lead to exposing inhuman corruption alongside social messaging that even if you can’t be kind to animals, at least stop harming them, Rai prolongs the chase. Even dog lovers will start dozing off after a while when Rai stretches and overdoes what should have been shorter, crisper, more believable storytelling. A stronger, more credible script with less meandering and less predictability would’ve got an appreciative tail wag.
Sure, children will enjoy what geeky Apu, his bond with Momo and Caesar the crime buster do. But wish Rai had cut the chase, literally.
Ohh My Dog – Watch it or not?: Children will enjoy it and dog-loving adults will connect to the central thought.
