Years have passed, yet some Bollywood rumours from the late 80s and early 90s still remain fresh in people’s memories. Neither Sanjay Dutt nor Madhuri Dixit has ever publicly confirmed that they were in a relationship but their alleged romance became one of the most discussed stories surrounding Bollywood’s popular on-screen pairs. Now, decades later, Saajan director Lawrence D’Souza has recalled a small moment from the film’s shoot that once again brings those old rumours into focus.
What Did The Saajan Director Notice?
Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit worked together in films including Khalnayak, Mahaanta and Sapne Sajan Ke. However, it was their pairing in Saajan that attracted particular attention with the film’s romantic storyline and their chemistry adding to the speculation about their equation offscreen.
Speaking to Vickey Lalwani, Lawrence D’souza explained that the cast and crew were far too involved in making the film to spend much time thinking about the rumours. “We never really paid attention to it because we were having so much fun while shooting. We didn’t even realise when the film was completed. So, in all that fun, we didn’t really notice what was happening.”
However, the filmmaker did remember one particular detail. Since he was also the cinematographer, D’Souza was behind the camera while filming Madhuri’s close-up shots. “I was the cameraman as well as the director, so sometimes he would look through the camera when I was shooting Madhuri’s close-ups. He would watch her, but I never really thought about whether anything was happening or not.”
What Happened To Sanjay Dutt & Madhuri Dixit Alleged Relationship?
The rumours continued for years, but reports suggested that their equation changed after Sanjay Dutt’s arrest in 1993. D’Souza admitted that he only came across the developments through news reports and did not know what had actually happened between the two actors.
When asked if Madhuri’s family had pressured her to distance herself from Dutt, the filmmaker simply said he had “no idea”.
Sanjay had also addressed the speculation in a 1993 interview, recalling that he apologised to Madhuri after reports about their alleged relationship became widespread.
The Two Stars Eventually Reunited
Despite everything that was written about their equation decades ago, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit eventually shared the screen again in Karan Johar’s Kalank in 2019, alongside Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur & Sonakshi Sinha.
While the film did not make a major impact at the box office, their reunion naturally reminded audiences of their earlier collaborations — and of the rumours that had followed them throughout the 1990s.
