In 1989, Tinnu Anand cast Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in a film named Shanakht. The script necessitated that Madhuri’s character removes her blouse and appear in a bra during a pivotal scene where her character offers to save Bachchan’s character. Although Madhuri initially consented, on the first day of filming, she felt uneasy and withdrew.
Reports suggest she locked herself in the vanity van for approximately 45 minutes before ultimately refusing to continue. Following her refusal, Tinnu Anand fired her on the spot “Okay, pack up… say goodbye to the film.” Amitabh Bachchan allegedly attempted to mediate but honored her choice, and the film was subsequently shelved.
The conclusion of that project marked the end of their professional collaboration. No additional full-length film featuring both actors was produced. Although various projects were pursued, none were finalized, including Bandua, along with other abandoned initiatives throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
By the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Amitabh Bachchan started to transition towards more mature, fatherly roles, whereas Madhuri rose to prominence as a youthful romantic lead. Both producers and audiences perceived a significant age and image disparity, which rendered their on-screen pairing less feasible.
As per various reports, Madhuri engaged in discussions regarding projects with her close friend and co-star Anil Kapoor, who cautioned her against collaborating with Amitabh due to the prevailing professional dynamics and competition within the industry at that time.
Madhuri Dixit categorically declined to participate in a scene that required her to wear only a bra in Shanakht, which resulted in her being removed from the film, leading to its shelving. This incident disrupted the momentum for a possible on-screen collaboration between Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit. Subsequent efforts to pair them together were unsuccessful due to a mix of script-related issues, their contrasting on-screen personas, and wider industry factors.
