After a two-year-long gap, the Mirzapur franchise is back but this time it is leaving our TV and mobile screens behind to arrive in cinemas. The announcement of Mirzapur: The Movie has already created a buzz among fans who have followed Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi since the series first premiered in 2018. But one question naturally remains: why did the makers choose a film after Season 3 instead of continuing the series?
At the grand trailer launch in Mumbai, producer Farhan Akhtar finally offered some insight. According to him, the answer lies with the people who made Mirzapur what it is today – the fans!
Farhan Akhtar Reveals Why Mirzapur Became A Movie
Speaking about the franchise’s journey, Farhan Akhtar credited the audience for constantly asking about the show’s return and eventually pushing the makers towards a theatrical film.
“The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I used to go, people used to ask me, ‘Ki Mirzapur kab aa rha hai?’ When it was announced, people used to ask me the release date, so it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast.”
So, rather than simply extending the story with another season, the team decided to give the Mirzapur world a larger cinematic canvas.
From A Crazy Pitch To One Of India’s Biggest Franchises
Farhan also looked back at the unusual beginning of the franchise. Recalling writer Puneet Krishna’s first pitch, he shared a rather funny story.
“When Puneet came to us for the first time, our first instinct was to refer him to a brain doctor. Then we thought of making it into a show so that people can get into it. Guru and Puneet are the heroes of the show. Ritesh, I, Excel Entertainment, and Amazon, we are really happy that we have been there to support them through this journey and work with them.”
That strange first pitch eventually became a franchise with a massive following.
Mirzapur: The Movie Brings Back The OGs
The film returns with Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi. Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Abhishek Banerjee are also returning, while Jitendra Kumar and Ravi Kishan join the new chapter.
The story once again revolves around the race for the Mirzapur ki gaddi but this time, the scale moves beyond Purvanchal with the trailer promising new locations, new challengers and familiar rivalries.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, Mirzapur: The Movie is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment. The film is set to release in cinemas on September 4, 2026.
For fans, the wait is almost over. The bigger question now is whether Mirzapur can recreate the same madness on the big screen that it built over three seasons on OTT!? The time will tell.
