Tom Cruise during his speech in Las Vegas, became visibly emotional as he honored his late friend. Val Kilmer, who passed away at the age of 65 due to pneumonia-related complications, was fondly remembered by Cruise, who articulated his deep admiration for Kilmer’s body of work and the significant mark he left on the industry.
In his remarks, Tom stated, “I would like to pay tribute to a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer. I cannot express how much I admire his work and how grateful I was for his participation in Top Gun, as well as his return for Top Gun: Maverick.”
Tom, 62, played the role of Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the 1986 hit film, while Kilmer took on the character of Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, initially a rival but later an ally. The two actors came together again in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, with Kilmer reprising his legendary role despite facing significant health challenges.
Val’s passing, which was revealed by his daughter on April 1, 2025, came after a prolonged battle with health issues. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and underwent rigorous treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and a tracheotomy, which permanently changed his voice.
Despite these obstacles, he made a remarkable comeback in Top Gun: Maverick, utilizing artificial intelligence to recreate his voice for the film. During a tribute at CinemaCon, Tom shared his thoughts on Val’s significant impact on the film industry, stating: “I think it would be nice if we could have a moment together because he loved movies and he gave a lot to all of us. Just kind of think about all the wonderful times that we had with him. I wish you well on the next journey.”
In a 2022 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tom expressed the emotional weight of reuniting with Val, remarking: “I just want to say that was pretty emotional. I’ve known Val for decades. For him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again. You’re looking at Iceman.”
Val Kilmer, a renowned actor from the 1980s and 90s, was celebrated for his memorable performances in films such as Batman Forever and The Doors. His legacy endures, and his return to Top Gun: Maverick stands as a testament to his commitment and artistry.
