Television actor and former Bigg Boss contestant Shardul Pandit has sparked a debate by calling out Bollywood and the Indian education system for neglecting India’s greatest warriors, especially the Marathas who made immense contribution to the country’s freedom. Amid the release of Chhaava, a film showcasing the bravery of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Pandit took to Instagram and expressed his thoughts by questioning why Maratha warriors have been sidelined in school history books and films.
Shardul Pandit Questions Bollywood & Education System
Shardul Pandit shared a video, stating how watching Chhaava made him realize the lack of knowledge about Maratha history. In his caption, he wrote, “I saw Chhaava yesterday and couldn’t help but ask my friend, ‘Why didn’t we study this in school? Why do I remember everything about certain rulers but not the Maratha warriors?’”
Recalling his school days, he questioned, “Why do I not remember the Maratha rule, their principles, and their steel-like resolve? Shouldn’t we take pride in warriors like Sambhaji and Shivaji?” He also criticized Bollywood for not giving the Maratha legacy its due on the big screen, writing, “Why has Bollywood been hesitant to showcase them? Why were they omitted from school books?”
Criticism of Political Narratives Around Chhaava
Further, Pandit also addressed YouTubers and influencers who have been unnecessarily linking Chhaava to politics. He wrote, “Now, when Maddock Films, Laxman Utekar, and Vicky Kaushal have made an accurate film, some YouTubers are trying to add political angles to it. Why is this happening now?”
Urging audiences to watch the film, he stated, “Please take your kids to watch Chhaava. We have done a gross injustice to this legendary warrior by not celebrating him enough.” He concluded by praising the team saying, “Laxman Utekar and Vicky Kaushal, you should be so proud of yourselves.” Netizens resonated with Shardul Pandit’s words, flooding the comment section with similar thoughts about their school curriculum ignoring Maratha history.
Meanwhile, Chhaava is enjoying tremendous success. Made on a reported budget of ₹130 crore, the film has already surpassed ₹150 crore worldwide. Starring Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji Maharaj, the film is based on the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant. It also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in key roles. Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava is receiving immense love for bringing Maratha history to life.
With Chhaava reigniting interest in Maratha history, Shardul Pandit’s remarks have added to the ongoing discussions about historical representation in Bollywood and education. His call for better recognition of India’s warrior heritage is gaining traction, making Chhaava more than just a film – it’s a cultural awakening.
