Toxic Movie Critic Review:
A love so raw, it hurts. Everybody in the vicinity. And there are guns ready to blast off all around.
Drama that emerges after an hour of confused mayhem finds tearful fiancee/bride Rebecca (Tara Sutaria), Raya (Yash) oozing uncontrolled testosterone,
an extramarital passion with Circuswali Nadia (Kiara Advani) and Raya’s sister Ganga (Nayanthara) who’s sold herself early to take care of bro’s hungry tummy.
But, as a line in the film goes, men have no brains below the tummy.
On the sidelines cackles blood thirsty rival gangster Elizabeth (Huma Qureshi).
A somewhat watchable story gets gnarled with blurred timelines, fragmented scenes and a hero who rasps rather than talks.
Add to it Geetu Mohandas’ two-ingredient mix of gun violence and below the belt pelvic passion. There’s even a shot of a couple making out in a car while someone’s pumping outside in rhythm to the moves inside.
Yes, there’s style, oodles of it. Narrow vision feminists will cheer woman power, however vacuous it may be. Eg A lineup of nuns morphing into an army of assassins. It’s just another change of backdrop as the violence moves from a graveyard to a circus tent to… Does the backdrop matter when the impact is low?
Yes, the photography is chilling. But no, the music has little melody, the decibel drowning the action.
Yes, after interval, the scattered fragments fall into place. Two Yashs for the price of one and a Rukmini Vasanth, but only one Geetu continuing with her two-ingredient mix.
However, neither the excessive violence nor the raunchiness go beyond style. Sorry, Geetu, there’s some slick foreplay, but where’s the climax?
The Hindi version has some substandard lip sync as well.
Toxic – Watch it or not?: Patience and passion for stylish cinema will have its limited takers but the Hindi audience will be largely switching off.
