“Salaar” Faces Screen Competition: “Dunki” Poised To Rule The Theatres

If we consider the exhibitors’s math, they will definitely go for the film where they see business. Dunki is going to get them benefits, which Salaar can’t.

“Salaar’s” creators made a brave decision about the release of this film, which, along with “Dunki,” has been making headlines since last week. The most-awaited collaboration of Rajkumar Hirani and Shah Rukh Khan, “Dunki,” will release on December 21, whereas Prashanth Neel’s “Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire,” starring Prabhas, will serve to audience on December 22. Many have criticized the decision of Prashanth Neel to release a film with SRK’s Dunki, and many have called it a courageous decision. Looking at the previous scenarios, Salaar will face a major setback in front of Dunki. And now the real race has started when it comes to getting theaters for the movie.

Salaar, a film by “KGF” makers, i.e., a film under the banner of “Homable films,” will start struggling to get screens, and there are multiple reasons for it. Let’s look at it step by step:

  • Salaar is releasing at the wrong time. There is no need to make this film clash with Dunki. If the makers had decided to release it on the occasion of the new year, that would have made some sense.
  • Salaar is a Telugu film. Though there has not been any bias between North and South now, Bollywood is still ahead of the regional film industry, and so are the Bollywood stars. Shah Rukh Khan has a huge fan following and, secondly, the success of his previous movies. The SRK’s opener film of this year, “Pathaan,” created a challenge for other movies by becoming the first Bollywood film to cross Rs. 100 crore on its first day worldwide. But later in September, King Khan’s other movie, “Jawan,” broke the record of his previous film by earning Rs. 129 crore worldwide on its first day. Well, about the credibility of these box office figures, it’s still a big question. But the massive success Shah Rukh Khan has gotten clearly says that Dunki will be another hit movie of the year.
  • But if we talk about Prabhas, after “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” released in 2017, his graph has fallen. His later-released movies like “Saaho” and “Adipurush” were all major flops at the box office. And it’s a general observation that if an actor has had a flop movie before, his next movie generally doesn’t get the expected rush. Hence, there are chances that people will choose Dunki over Salaar.
  • If we consider the exhibitors’ math, they will definitely go for the film where they see business. Dunki is going to get them benefits, which Salaar can’t.
  • The system of pre-booking the theaters adds on to this. Bollywood big stars, big filmmakers, and their so-called big films pre-booked the theaters, so this can ultimately create an obstacle for Salaar to get screens.
  • Though both films are pan-India films, people easily accept Bollywood over anything.

Thus, the struggle has started; “Salaar” will face a troublesome situation to get theaters, and what if makers decide to postpone its release?
