THIS Malayalam Movie Becomes India’s Official Entry To Oscars 2024

Jude Anthany Joseph's directorial Malayalam movie "2018" has been selected as India's official entry to Oscars 2024.

Malayalam movie “2018” has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars, according to a report by the news agency PTI. The film, which is subtitled “Everyone Is A Hero,” tells a gripping story of survival amidst the devastating floods that struck Kerala in 2018.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, “2018” boasts a star-studded cast including Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal. The film made its debut in May this year and has taken both critics and audiences by storm. Notably, it has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and ranks among the top earners in Indian cinema this year.

Speaking at a press conference, filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, who also serves as the chairman of the 16-member selection committee, highlighted the film’s selection. He emphasized that “2018” stood out due to its powerful theme addressing the impacts of climate change, as reported by PTI. This recognition is a significant achievement for the film and the entire Indian film industry.

“2018” will be competing in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, a category previously known as Best Foreign Film. It’s worth noting that no Indian entry has been nominated in this category since the memorable success of “Lagaan” in 2002. Only two other Indian films have previously reached the final five nominees – “Mother India,” featuring Nargis, and Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!”

Last year, India’s official Oscar entry was “Chhello Show,” which unfortunately didn’t secure a nomination. However, it was still a significant year for Indian cinema, with RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” winning Best Original Song and “The Elephant Whisperers” earning the Best Documentary Short Subject award. Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes” received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature but narrowly missed out on winning.
