Nikita Roy Critic Review:
The take-off has eerie atmospherics. Dr Sanal Roy (Arjun Rampal) accepts that he’s doomed, he can’t shake off the inevitable. The cops in UK close it as a suicide.
Just after Nikita Roy (Sonakshi Sinha) has released her book ‘Superstitions InThe Modern Age’, she sets off to uncover what really happened to Sanal, her mentor, motivator and brother. A member of the International Rationalist Community, the debate is open between blind faith and superstition vs rational, scientific thinking.
At the centre is godman Amar Dev (Paresh Rawal) with claims of healing powers, presiding over Tru Faith Foundation, a vast ashram in the UK. Before his death, Sanal had planted an informer inside the ashram to expose the fakery behind blind faith.
Director Kussh Sinha with his team of writers (Belal Khalique, Pawan Kripalani, Neel Mohanty, Ankur Takrani) travels with cinematographer Anshul Chobey to help Nikita track the mystery of Dr Sanal Roy’s suicide.
The good part is that Kussh handles it well, there is no gaucheness evident in his directorial debut. Without humdrum tropes like creaking doors and empty jump starts, the taking and ambience with an appropriate background score (by Abhinav Shekhar) are apt for a horror show.
Also, Sonakshi Sinha always has the screen presence to carry off the role of a fearless, strong-willed woman. Arjun Rampal in a guest appearance and Suhail Nayyar as Jolly are comfortable.
However, the screenplay with nocturnal visits to lonely, jungle-surrounded spots that force-feed the creepiness and the uni-dimensional mission to uncover and reveal the truth behind Amar Dev’s cult are without a twist or a thrill. What Nikita and ex-boyfriend Jolly (Suhail Nayyar) discover about the godman could’ve easily been found by Sanal himself instead of succumbing to hallucinations.
A debate that will live as long as mankind exists, therefore peters out without excitement.
Nikita Roy Watch Or Not?: Strictly for those who get a kick out of eerie ambience and grotesque drawings on the wall.
